How to Create the Ideal Kids’ Bedroom
Choosing the right kids bedroom furniture and décor can be a daunting task. And finding functional furniture and décor to match your kid’s tastes is not easy. Luckily, Wayfair has enlisted the help of several bloggers who have recently made over their child’s bedroom. 1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
Getting your child involved in the design! My seven-year-old has a big collection of toy weapons, so we worked together to design an "armoury" pegboard to display them all. He's so proud of it. It's always the first thing he shows friends when they come over. Labeled storage is also key. As long as everything has a place, there's at least a chance they'll keep it tidy!
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
There wasn't one particular source of inspiration. I just wanted to create a space that was bright and happy, using what we had as much as possible and sticking to a tight budget for the rest. I was also keen on carving out space for both kids (a boy and a girl) to make their own. The shelves above the beds are perfect for that. They love displaying all their trinkets and creations on the shelves.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
How light and colourful it is. The white walls allow all the other pops of colour to make a big impact, but because they give your eye somewhere to rest, it doesn't feel too busy or cluttered.
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
I bought cheap wooden frames for the beds, then DIY'd the upholstery. I wish I'd spent a little more on sturdier frames! The wood was so soft that the side of one of the beds actually broke in two when my skinny little man jumped on it. I was able to patch it up, but it was a headache that could've been avoided just by investing a little more money.

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
Purchase kids bedroom furniture that can grow with your child! I believe in spending a little more money and investing in pieces that are built to last. Make sure pieces are durable and timeless. You can switch out less expensive items like bedding and art more frequently as tastes and trends change.
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
My daughter's headboard was the inspiration that started her bedroom design. I have four sons and just one daughter. I wanted her bedroom to be a girly retreat from all of the boys in the house. We wanted pink and gold to be woven into the room, giving it an understated, glamorous feel. Pink can be overdone in girls' bedrooms, so we carefully added pops of pink and anchored it with the unexpected touches of leopard print.
3. What's your favorite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
I love the leopard chair in her bedroom! This chair was covered in baby blue velvet and sat in my son's nursery. When his nursery became a big boy room, the chair no longer had a home. Its fabulous lines were just too good to be sold or set aside. I had it reupholstered for almost nothing in a luxurious velvet leopard fabric. The transformation was stunning! I love that it sat in my nursery and now has new life in her special room.
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
I wish I knew how long the whole room transformation would take! Sometimes we want things done as quickly as we see them done on TV. Real life doesn't usually work that way. Finding the right artwork, bedding, and drapery fabric took much longer than I had anticipated. I had to keep reminding myself to just enjoy the process with my daughter. The finished room took about six months to complete, but was worth every minute! She loves her room and I love that we did it together.

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
Use what you have and make it work! How do we do that? Usually paint, paint, paint!
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
Have a jumping off point. Ours was the limitation of being a renter. Luckily, peel and stick removable dots and a faux chandelier came to the rescue. It all began to come together from there.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
We love that it's so bright and cheerful as well as the fact that it was my childhood bedroom that I grew up in.
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
Making a space your own is ALWAYS worth it! Even if you're living in your not so dreamy house or renting, doing what you can do to make it feel like "you" is always good advice!

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
I would definitely recommend washable layers of bedding. There are so many comforters and quilts that look pretty in the stores, but they are not easily washable or dry clean only. As such, they don't get washed like they should. I have heard too many friends and even parents say that they never wash their child's quilts or comforters. Think of all the germs and dirt....eek! I not only wash Brooklyn's sheets regularly, but she has a warm blanket over her sheets, a down comforter alternative on top of that, a thin ruffle coverlet over that, and finally, a heavier, easy-to-wash quilt that I keep folded at the foot of her bed (for cooler nights). All of these items are washed regularly. They keep her bed looking bright and clean and not discolored or dingy. This is very important as our eyes are instantly drawn to the bed first as we enter the bedroom!
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
My daughter has entered that "tween" phase where she wanted a little bit more of a grown-up look. She loves pink as much as I do, but she really wanted hints of it in order to create a special bedroom. She wanted soothing, light colors that kept her room bright. When we found her headboard, we knew it was the one. We started thinking light gray, lots of white, hints of blush, and touches of gold. We love mixing metals, and the gray and gold were a beautiful choice. She loves vintage pieces like I do but she wanted a modern twist to it as well.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
I love how clean and elegant it looks as you walk in. It's not busy, but is fun and sort of whimsical with the pretty wallpaper flowers. It has a very feminine and tranquil feel. I'm also glad I chose sheer curtains that allow light to easily pass through. It helps keep the room bright and makes the bedroom look bigger. Brooklyn and her friends LOVE going in to her room to play. I do as well. We sit on her bed and talk and talk. It's a lovely space to retreat to. That's important to me...not being afraid of a dirty, busy, chaotic bedroom. Some parents avoid their children's rooms for that very reason. Instead, it's a place that we, as parents, love walking in to and gives us all opportunities to visit more and communicate more easily.
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
I wish I would have tested more paints on the walls and waited to look at them at different hours of the day. I tested one or two in a couple of spots and thought it was good enough. We went with a really light grey, almost white-looking. After painting the entire room, the sun started to set and we realized it looked like a completely different color. It was devastating. I then did what I should've done in the beginning and tested several paints. I waited and looked at them at different hours of the day. It was very helpful and lead me to my final paint decision. In the end, the paints I loved in my friends' homes did not look good against my daughter's bedroom furniture or in her room as a result of the way it faces the sun. Keep this in mind as you create your kid's bedroom and don't make the same mistake!

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
It's not visible in any of the photos, but I added some under-the-bed storage bins to hold my daughter's toys. The bins make it easy for her to keep her room clean and helps keep the visible kiddie clutter somewhat under control.
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
My daughter loves color and all things girly, so my goal was to combine those two things into a design that would age with her. The gold canopy bed is every girl's fantasy, and I selected a bright, multi-colored ikat fabric for her drapes. What's so great about both of those elements is they have an ageless appeal, so I only need to change out her accessories and bedding as she enters her teens.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
Without a doubt my favourite thing about the bedroom makeover is the bright red dresser. It adds so much fun to the space and completely suits my daughter's bright personality. The room would've been way too serious without it!
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
Don't underestimate the amount of storage space you need in a child's bedroom! Storage baskets and bins are this room's best friends, along with a semi-annual purging of toys.

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
Seeing as it's a boys' bedroom and our boys are obsessed with Legos, we built a Lego building station. We bought a small bin organizer where they could store all their Legos and then used a basic table underneath, where they could sit at and build their Legos. Having a dedicated “station” for this fosters more playtime with their Legos!
2. What inspired the decor of your child's bedroom?
Funny enough, the wall colors were inspired by my favourite coffee mug. The top quarter of it was white and the rest of it was a gray cable knit sweater. I didn't intentionally do the walls to look like it, but after I painted them, I realized I must have been secretly inspired by my mug! For the rest of the bedroom, the duvet cover's animal pattern and whimsical, colourful palette helped to complete the look.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
That's hard to say because I truly do love all of the elements. I love how the gallery wall turned out, mixing in their initials and a few fun aspects. I love the overall random colors throughout the space that make it feel fun and whimsical.
4. What's the one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
We initially painted the bed frames without sanding them, thinking it would stick. Three coats of paint later, it wasn't sticking properly, so we had to sand everything down and start again. That was a pain, but in the end it turned out well. I wish we sanded them down from the beginning.

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
I love the bunk beds, and especially appreciate the under-the-bed storage. Rolling storage bins make for easy access of toys, and even better, easy clean up! I think every parent is constantly working to keep kids spaces clean and tidy, or at least, easy for their kids to clean up after a day of creating, imagining, and making messes.
2. What inspired the decor of your child's bedroom?
We live near a lake, so I am especially drawn to bright, fresh, coastal decor. I wanted the room to have a bit of a "bunkroom at the lake" feel with nods to camp inspired items like the plaid pillows, hand painted signage, and reclaimed elements. I wanted the room to grow with my boys without needing a major overhaul in two or three years. It flows with the rest of our home while still being a distinct boys space.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
I love the white washed pine walls. While it was very labor intensive, I adore the finished look! My kids would have to say the hideaway curtain on the lower bunk or the DIY wall mount book shelf are up at the top of their list.
4. What's the one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
I take a long time to decide things when it comes to decorating my own home, and this space was no different. It took me a while to commit to things, and to be honest, I wish I would have tackled it sooner! With a little creativity, I was able to complete this space on a budget, and my kids completely love having their own space.
Brit @ House Updated

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
A cozy reading spot. In my daughter's bedroom, we used a hanging chair with a stash of books right next to it. You'll often find my daughter there. It makes the whole room cozy and inviting, not to mention encourages book time. Even if you don't have room for a whole chair, a bean bag, floor pillow, or teepee, make sure to create a little spot for your kids to chill and read.
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
I really let my daughter lead the way. The jumping off point was that she wanted a pink room, and I wanted her to enjoy that without pink everything. So we toned down the pink walls with lots of white (rug, bedding, furniture, drapes, picture frames) and then layered in other fun colors on top. While the room still reads pink, there is very little pink in it except for the walls! Also, keeping the décor happy and kid-friendly was a perfect way to make sure she loves her room.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
So many favorites, but I'd have to say the hanging chair wins. It's whimsical, fun, and I love sneaking in to sit on it too. A close second is her junior loft bed. The bedroom isn't large, so maximizing storage by putting the dresser under the bed was the perfect solution. Plus, she loves that it is up high - all the better for bossing around people on the ground.
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
Before starting the project, I wish I had known that pulling together a collected space takes longer than I thought! Working in what you have is helpful but bringing in new pieces of kids bedroom furniture takes time and isn't done overnight. Also, adding in lots of extra storage to keep the space looking clean and organized is key - I wish I had used more hidden storage like baskets on those open shelves!
Lauren @ A Lo and Behold Life

1. What's one thing in your child's bedroom you'd absolutely recommend to other parents?
The paint used on the walls - Benjamin Moore Patriotic White. White walls are totally on trend. This color has the slightest tint of blue and really makes the room feel a lot bigger and airy. Plus, it makes the fun décor and accessories pop!
2. What inspired the décor of your child's bedroom?
We live in Southern California so coastal blue hues and rustic woods are totally my vibe.
3. What's your favourite thing about your child's bedroom makeover?
In my house décor, I try to create a home that is comfortable and enjoyed by the people that live in it. I love how much my twin boys are enjoying their big boy room makeover - hearing the giggles when they are playing in there makes me smile.
4. What's one thing you wished you knew before you started the project?
We underestimated how long it would take to DIY the plank closet doors. That project put us a week behind schedule.
