Wall Décor Makeovers from the Experts
Room makeovers include many components. From furniture, to wall color, to lighting, it's easy to forget something. However, bare walls can leave the room feeling bland and boring. Wall décor is the perfect option to create a focal point in the room, all while adding a finishing touch to the room's style.
Wall décor - including wall art, wall accents, and wall mirrors - can brighten and bring life to a room. Here at Wayfair, we're inspired by wall décor transformations. That's why we asked eleven interior designers to share their recent room makeovers featuring wall décor. And look out for our tips to help you utilize wall decorations in your own home!

Before
This was a challenging project because the homeowner wanted to change everything! When he purchased the home, it was newly renovated but wasn't at all what the homeowner wanted. The walls were dark gray and white throughout. The accent color was black. The rooms were spare. There were crystal light fixtures (and switches) everywhere! Because our client's entertaining style is casual and he loves technology, we decided to replace the more traditional dining room with a banquet arrangement. There had been no artwork and instead a very glitzy chandelier took center stage. Overall, the rooms felt very cold and contemporary.
After
Using wall decor as well as built in shelving with carefully placed accessories are what you need to "finish" the room. Think of them as the outline in the picture. Without them, the room will feel incomplete and not as personal.

Before
Originally, the accessories and wall décor felt dark and heavy, and the fireplace lacked the necessary interest to serve as a strong focal point.
After
The bones of this home are very strong, and I wanted the décor in the space to connect with the light, airy story we were telling throughout. We removed bulky accessories, faux florals, and dark artwork, replacing them with slimmer, streamlined pieces that celebrate negative space. We included textural pieces of art, a sunburst mirror to enhance light within the space, and installed a seagrass wallcovering to the back of the built-in shelves for a layered sense of interest.

Before
Before, the walls were bare. This was a new build.
After
The new look is "clean" and has a "wow" factor the owners sought. We used textured wall covering and strong, vivid graphic art to create drama.

Before
This 90s bedroom needed a wake-up. The dated design was not only old and carried an air of depression, but it failed to reflect the owner's personality.
After
The show stopper in this space are the two-tones that flow all the way around the room. We added a large scale landscape photograph for an organic feel and hung planters on the adjacent wall. These bedroom wall decor pieces help create some real personality in the space, customized to the client.

Before
Before this makeover, this great room had only a few bar signs and one large black and white printed canvas that had sentimental value to the homeowners. The main living area was not decorated for the young female professionals living in the space, and they only had the essentials for a standard room (an old sofa that came with the condo, a small TV unit, and a small bookcase). There was nothing that enticed you when you entered the room nor was there a certain personal style.
After
I included the existing wall decorations in the design but mixed in more modern wall decor to fill the space and make the room more inviting. Adding decorative mirrors with a unique frame to a small space is a great way to bring in more reflective light and more texture to a wall.
Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Decorating Style: A combination of rustic country and industrial. When it comes to décor for residential and builder clients, we look at their tastes and style and blend it with current trends. We like to combine the practical/functional with style; finding a balance between the two is essential.

They work exclusively with a local real estate brokerage providing their clients with home staging services to get their homes sold quickly and for top dollar. They also work with private residential clients looking for complete designer looks for larger updates/renovations, and builders/developers on designer interior packages and model homes.
Before
The old wall was a plain painted wall in a soft white tone with a series of two simple framed mirrors mounted above the sofa. The look was very simple and clean, but the room was lacking in depth and personality. The furnishings didn't offer much in the way of character or texture. Many of the pieces in this space were sleek and smooth. There is some pattern and one pop of color. The room looked a bit cookie-cutter without a lot of originality.
After
The new wall is an accent wall in a reclaimed brick, which adds an industrial touch to the space. The room now has some texture and character but is still clean and bright. We kept the drapery, track light, main wall color, end tables and sofa. We added some other pieces to play into the industrial feel that this room now has with the addition of the brick feature wall. The art piece is also full of texture and balances out nicely against the brick wall. We added some other textures such as reclaimed wood (TV stand), cow hide patchwork area rug, a leather arm chair with a sheepskin throw, and a metal industrial cage floor lamp with vintage bulbs. The addition of these pieces along with the brick feature wall gives this room a whole new industrial look and feel.

Before
For this living room makeover, we started with an extremely bold shell. The original design of the house featured dark walls, gallery walls of cross decor, large portraiture and heavy wall mirrors.
After
Our goal with the new wall décor for the living room was to simplify the space and create a very calm and elegant space. We had a custom piece of art in a very dramatic 5'x 8' size. We chose to have a large abstract piece featuring shades of purple and gray. Using this as the basis of our color palette, we were able to bring in various earth tones, metallic colors, and accents of gray and purple throughout the space. The large size of the piece really allows the fireplace to stand out and draws the eye up to the tall ceilings. The overall lightness of the piece in the space also draws attention to the gorgeous existing cast stone elements throughout.
