It's soft and cozy and has sort of lived-in look, and looks like a big, soft thick corduroy pattern. The detached pillow makes it comfortable for your head when you lean back on it, which is really nice. I had thought the small pillow was "detachable" (meaning you have the option to have it connected to the big pillow, or detach it), but there is no mechanism (like velcro or ties) to attach it to the main pillow. So that's less convenient, because as you sit forward, it will fall. Still nice to have, though. In terms of structure, it's pretty substantial and seems like it should mostly hold it's shape (brand new though so I can't say for sure.) It's a little more slouchy then I hoped, with less of a super clear top and bottom (meaning it's not that the bottom of what I was hoping was more of a triangle is significantly wider than the the top.) You definitely need to prop it against a wall or a headboard (meaning it's not sturdy enough on it's own to hold your weight without something behind it, but that is to be expected - just pointing it out for clarity.) It would be nice if it had ties on the sides in case someone wanted to easily/temporarily adhere it to the side of the bed. It does have two nice pockets on either end that can hold a phone, water bottle, etc. Overall I'm glad I got this for my son's dorm room!
