Poynter's mythological image draws upon Homer's "The Odyssey" that describes "a pleasant shadowy cave sacred to the nymphs .. the cave has long stone looms where nymphs weave cloth with a deep sea-purple dye, an amazing thing to see." The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1903. The authentic stretched canvas replica captures the original painting's texture, depth of colour, and even its brushstrokes, which are applied by hand.
