The Great American Rain Barrel Company they re- purpose their own shipping drums into a complete water collection system right at their food importing plant in Hyde Park, MA, something that they have been doing for 20 plus years. Back in the late eighties, two local school teachers came up with the idea of recycling shipping drums into rain barrels modeled after those they had seen in English Gardens. The barrel they selected was a large 60 gallon drum that brought olives from Spain from a food importing/packing company in Boston. The olives were shipped and sometimes even cured in the barrels, spending anywhere from 6 months to two years in the barrel. Given the natural synergy with their import business and the environmental implications the Great American Rain Barrel Company was formed. Now, more than two decades later, with the support and enthusiasm of a remarkable customer base, The Great American Rain Barrel is one of the largest sellers re-purposed rain barrels to communities and individuals nationwide.
