I bought the colander primarily to use as a cover in the microwave. However, I used it once when I poured pasta into it in the sink and it tipped over, so be aware that it's not very sturdy that way. You need to pour the liquid more slowly and carefully to avoid that happening. It works well as a splatter guard in the microwave though, which is why I bought it.
