These are definitely rough & rustic. After reading the reviews to that effect, I bought two knowing that they'd need some work. They are just the right size and shape for my needs. I bought the "antiqued white" which has just a thin light wash to lighten the wood, NOT the chippy vintage white.

I'm very happy with every purchase. My only problem was with FedEx who delivered one purchase to the neighbor's home.
