I have used these for both types of candles. Perfect for either. They work great for candles that may drip and you don't want the wax on anything beneath the candle holder. I used them with the fun melting Halloween candles and they caught all the wax.

Just what I was looking for to prevent wax drips from reaching my tablecloth. So clever that when flipped over they can be used for pillar candles. Extremely satisfied with this item
