Solid, Stylish Executive Desk with Great Value - A Few Design Quirks to Note
**Shipping & Delivery**
The desk arrived safely, packaged across 4 separate boxes (one for the desktop, one for the motor assembly, one for the remaining desk frame/cabinets, and one for the standalone file cabinet). Everything was packed well with no transit damage.
**Assembly & Placement**
Assembly was pretty straightforward, though definitely expect it to take some time given the size and complexity of the setup. A few pre-drilled holes didn't line up perfectly, but it was minor enough that it didn't impact the overall structural integrity or stability of the desk.
- Placement Tip: This desk is extremely heavy after it's put together. If you have carpeted floors like I do, it is nearly impossible to shift around once built. I strongly recommend assembling it as close to its final resting position as possible. If you have hardwood, the plastic foot glides should make sliding it a bit easier, but on carpet, you’ll want it in place before you finish setup.
**Motor & Functionality**
The electric motor for the standing mechanism is fantastic—it runs smoothly with zero hesitation and is whisper-quiet. The transitions between sitting and standing heights are seamless.
**Storage & Design Quirks (Things to Keep in Mind)**
While I’m very happy with the desk overall, there are a few minor design choices worth mentioning:
- PC Cabinet Ventilation: The dedicated tower cabinet lacks ventilation holes for airflow. If you run a high-performance PC, heat will build up quickly. I ended up placing my PC tower on top of the desktop instead, which also solves the issue of cables stretching when raising the desk to standing height. I may eventually cut out a section and install a cabinet fan for ventilation.
- Cabinet Doors & Layout: The handles on the left-side cabinet doors feel a bit unintuitive as they are centered on the door, but they open to the left; having the handles on the right edge would make more ergonomic sense or having these function as slide-out drawers instead.
- Standalone File Cabinet: The side file cabinet piece is entirely separate, it doesn't hook or latch onto the main desk frame, nor does it sit 100% flush with the desk edge. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, but good to know ahead of time.
- Locks & Keys: The locks on the cabinets feel somewhat cheap. Interestingly, all 8 keys provided across the set are identical, meaning any key opens every lock. It offers basic privacy, but don't expect high-security locking.
**Value & Final Thoughts**
Despite the small critiques, this desk offers incredible value for the money. The actual product branding on the box is ModernMate, and Wayfair’s price was significantly better than buying directly from the manufacturer (seems like the price dropped even further this week)! It looks high-end, works reliably, and gives you a massive amount of workspace. Highly recommended if you want an executive-style standing desk without paying thousands.
(P.S. To the Wayfair listing team: Please fix the typo in the product title! It currently reads "Loking File Cabinet" instead of "Locking").
