This is the second "cheaper" bed I bought on Wayfair, and both had huge issues with off-gassing. There is always something weird about the varnish or the finish on these cheap composite wood pieces. In this specific piece, there were a number of issues.
First and foremost is the smell of the finish. I learned my lesson from the first bed I purchased and couldn't return. This time, I took each piece out of the box, washed and scrubbed it with a vinegar and baking soda mix, and then had it outside in the sun to off-gas and air out. Long story short...all this work and the wood pieces still smell.
If the smell wasn't enough, this thing is just cheaply made. I know you get what you pay for, and I wanted something quick and easy to replace the last bed that gave my 6-year-old respiratory issues for a week before we realized it was the bed. However, the wood and configuration are really terrible. This thing won't last a year.
On top of all of this, the interesting and cool "cushioned" headboard is about as stiff as a piece of a wood. Not great.
As with many of these kinds of things, the instructions are terrible, often missing key elements, not depicting the pieces correctly or showing how something should be placed. I also feel like the directions to build the bed out of order, bookcase, headboard, rails, support pieces, drawers, more support pieces...strange order for sure.
I am woefully disappointed in this product and basically dissembled it and threw it out.
