From the picture it looks like it's holding a book open for you to be able to read in bed but the slots around the stand aren't wide enough to hold any kind of book - disappointing. They give you a cheap plastic stopper to keep your computer from sliding off if you want the stand leaning toward you. But again the slots around the stand aren't deep enough to confidently hold the plastic stopper & the weight of my MacBook Air in place. The plastic stopper is the exact same vertical width as my iPad mini so it can't keep it on the stand reliably, either. Otherwise, it works great if you use it, keeping it flat.
