Sturdy, but not well sanded. Watch out for splinters (especially under the seat, around the edges).

These are well made stools. I have some big guys that sit on these and they've held up for 2 years now with no problems. I also had purchased these specific stools because they have a nice back and at that time, we had 4 little grandchildren so when I put them up on the stools, they could sit there safely and I didn't have to worry so much about them falling off. These stools are easy to wipe off with a damp rag.
