No assembly. Heavy duty solid wood.

The finish is beautiful, gorgeous even. What holds this back is the construction. As the old saying goes, they don't make 'em like they used to. The drawer slides are of abysmal quality. They went to so much trouble to save money that one side doesn't even have a stop; it's not a mistake- this is how the slides are designed. So if you pull a drawer out to the stop it cants to one side. The drawer bottoms are held on with staples, so definitely not for anything heavy. So, to sum it up, it looks like incredibly good, quality furniture, but is built like discount furniture.
