Kohler Genuine Part 84999 Toilet Seat Anchor Kit 84999

Kit K-84999 is used to replace the hidden toilet seat bolt anchors on Rialto toilet K-3386-0, maybe others. There are no visible nuts for the seat hold-down bolts. They screw into what amounts to big Molley fasteners inside inaccessible hidden recesses. Our bolts were seized in the Molleys and each whole assembly was rotating. There is no obvious way to extract them. The kit sort-of worked, but the best part was the instructions showed how things went together in the first place so by studying that and reversing the process I got the old assemblies out. The “hold on” tool for the anchors is too flimsy to get a good bite, but the instructions suggested a “Plan B” which did work. Namely, grab the head of the bolt with Vise-Grips and *very gently* wiggle and rotate and pull upward until you get it out; gently so you don't crack the toilet. Reassembly was straightforward, and I put Permatex (brand name) anti-seize compound (just what everybody stocks in their bathroom) on the threads so maybe they won’t rust together in the corrosive atmosphere surrounding a toilet. Next time I shall look for proper size plastic wall anchors with self-tapping screws at the hardware store and try them. Kohler apparently does not service the anchors separately. The problem was caused by overly-complex engineering that hid the nuts in the first place. Does anyone go around looking for visible nuts under people’s toilets? Perhaps some designer was solving a non-problem there.

It makes no sense to require bolts and expansion anchors to be cut and drilled out in order to replace a toilet seat. I can't imagine a worse design. The tools in the parts kit were useless.

The good news: This works as advertised. The bad news: I need this device because I bought a Rialto toilet 20 years ago. Who designs a toilet with a seat that can't be replaced, or tightened easily? Kohler, apparently. If I had a time machine, I'd go back to the Home Expo, & buy something else. I had no choice but to use this tool. I have regretted the constant maintenance this toilet has required since it was installed, in 2001. Caveat emptor.

I bought this a month ago because Kohler’s design of original product was/is flawed and the fact they discontinued manufacturing the toilet is proof positive.
