I had the prior design which was a push-rod design that, 1. didn't work, 2. broke down, and 3. clogged easily. At the time, I couldn't recommend any tea for two style tubs because the drain was terrible. This new design fixes all that and looks just as good. So, it's OK to buy these Kohler tubs.

I'm not impressed with this drain. To open and close it, you have to push on a brass knob that's mounted in a plastic assembly. It feels very stiff and not particularly durable—I’m just waiting for it to break. It definitely doesn’t seem as robust as the classic Kohler drains I’ve used before. I suspect this design exists to accommodate the drain trim part (K-23857-CP), which allows a second person to lean back more comfortably in the tub. But if you're like me and using the tub solo, that feature is unnecessary. Most single users would probably prefer a simpler, sturdier, more traditional drain design that looks good on its own without the added trim.
