This is a gorgeous ladder, and well-made. It has hooks at the top and slides smoothly along the rail. It can be extended for use, then stored upright. The natural color is pretty but could be stained if you wanted to. It’s sturdy, even with just one brake locked. The ladder was easy to put together—I recommend loosely fastening all the pieces into place first, then strategically tighten all screws to secure. The rail was also easy to install. The part that attaches to the wall can slide to where you need it, then tightened. We removed one bracket, used a laser level to mark the holes and pre-drill them on the bookshelf, then loosened all the brackets so we could slide them into place to secure. The hardware itself is solid, but the provided screws were cheap. We replaced them with some better screws and had no problems after that. The directions are lacking, but not hard to figure out. The height of the rail is a bit flexible because of the hook mechanism, so that was convenient. (You do need to have a drill bit for getting through the wood itself to install the hooks.)
