20-Minute DIY: Faux Flower Arrangement

Craft an evergreen focal point in just a few easy steps.

Flowers top nearly every list of instant upgrades for your home—with good reason. Equal parts cheery and earthy, an arrangement in any room brings instant impact. And the blooms don’t have to be real: Fake flowers can emote the vividness, subtlety, and texture of real flowers but with an enduring practicality.

Take this small yet transformative touch into your own hands with our simple DIY flower arrangement. Our editors opted for faux flowers, so you can admire—and adapt—your work for years to come.

Materials

  • An assortment of faux flowers and greeney
  • A vessel, ideally low and wide
  • Chicken wire and wire cutters

Tip! Don’t have chicken wire handy? Use clear tape to create the grid pattern instead.

Steps

1. Start visualizing: Lay out your selection of flowers and greenery for a holistic glance and begin mapping out your pairings. You don't need to use all the blossoms you have. For our arrangement, we chose to work with only peonies and two types of roses.

2. Create a secure base: Line the opening of your vessel with chicken wire to keep your flowers in place. There's no need to be exact! Simply cut a square big enough to cover, then tuck the corners and nestle it in.

3. Establish a perimeter: Use the outward edge of your vessel as your baseline. This sets the stage of your arrangement, so keep an eye on variation, making sure to blend blooms of all sizes.

Tip! Once you've created the outline, check your remaining assortment before moving on. This will help you ensure you have plenty of options available for an even final result.

4. Round it out: Working inward, fill in the rest of your arrangement. Start with the biggest blooms, scattering them throughout the rest of the space. Then begin to interweave the rest of your flowers, and smartly leverage greenery to hide residual holes for a complete, full look.

Tip!  Rotate your vessel as you work for an arrangement that stuns from all angles.

5. Show it off:  Put your newfound floral savvy on display, placing your arrangement on a coffee or side table, bookshelf, mantel, or anywhere that catches the eye.
