9 Ideas for Updating Your Decor with Paint

See how our clever and creative bloggers turned these everyday items into things of beauty!

1. Chalkboard Planters

Blogger Lesley Graham made over a budget-friendly basket set with chalkboard paint and a little creativity.

To keep the baskets free from water damage, lay down waterproof lining before inserting the potted plant into the basket. To finish this adorable project, draw not-so-perfect Xs and stripes with chalk.

2. Striped Curtains

Reichel Broussard of Copy Cat Chic and Tan Rutley of Squirrelly Minds both painted large, bold stripes onto their white curtains. Mark off the stripes with painter's tape for crisp lines. It's also a good idea to cover the parts of the curtains you want to remain unpainted with newspaper or plastic.

Tip! Try smaller stripes or alternating colours for a different take on the curtains these bloggers created.

3. Dip-Dyed Basket

Kate of DomestiKated Life chose to dye, instead of paint, her woven basket. To achieve this look, she dipped the basket into a large plastic bin filled with a solution of dye, vinegar, and water. She let it sit for four hours to become a vibrant fuschia, and then let it dry for several more hours. The dye solution naturally seeps up the basket's fibres to create the faded ombre effect.

4. Herringbone Runner

Lindsey of Mac & Marlborough (also a member of Wayfair.com's PR team) created this fun herringbone runner for her kitchen.

By taping off the pattern with painter's tape and using paint in a shade that matched her wall colour, Lindsey turned an ordinary rug into a playful accent.

5. Painted Planters

Jessica of Four Generations One Roof and Laurel of A Bubbly Life painted stripes and geometric patterns onto their baskets. Perfect for both outdoor and inside spaces, these planters add colour and life to any room.

Tip! If you have a black thumb, these baskets are ideal planters for faux greenery, too!

6. Polka Dot Curtains

Lidy of Hello Lidy created a quirky vibe by stenciling polka dots in a triangular pattern on plain white curtains. Lidy envisioned an imaginary triangle where the two curtain panels meet and painted circles within that space. The end result looks like polka dots are gently falling from the sky.

Tip! For a fresh twist on polka dots, don't stencil them on in an orderly manner. Instead, vary the size of the dots and paint them on randomly for casual appeal.

7. Geometric Rug

Kelly, another member of Wayfair.com's PR team, designed a global-inspired rug that brings real pizzazz to her living room. Four paint colours, lots of painter's tape, and even more patience transformed a plain jute rug into a work of art.

Tip! When making a precise design, a good rule of thumb is to measure twice and paint once. You'll be happy you did all the math when you see the beautiful end result.

8. Striped Basket

To complement her existing living room décor, Rhoda of Southern Hospitality painted a stripe along the middle of her woven wood basket.

Tip! If you have a handled basket, consider just painting the handles a different colour—the bolder the better. It's a simple change, but one that can make a big impact.

9. Customized Storage Baskets

For a truly one-of-a-kind accent, freehand designs are the way to go. Amy of This Heart of Mine painted loops along the bottom of her plain tan baskets. Instead of filling all of the shapes in, she left some open for a cool effect.

Tip! Consider other patterns and motifs when you tackle this DIY project. Stars, plaid, quatrefoil, trellis, florals, houndstooth, ikat—the possibilities are endless.
