Before & After: 5 Curb Appeal Makeovers

See how our bloggers transformed their front entries, from a portico overhaul to small porch updates.

1. A Bright Portico Renovation

Jessica Bruno, of Four Generations One Roof, thought her home's existing entry was feeling a little worn down and dark.

She made some big structural changes—replacing the current columns with larger, wider-set Tuscan versions, enlarging the archway over the entrance, and adding decorative lead glass window panes. (Take a look below to see the portico mid-way through the renovation.) Small changes, from hardware additions to coats of paint, are the cherry on top of this redo.

1. Nickel hardware—house numbers, doorbell, and door knob—lends shine and sleekness.

2. Large planters mimic the lines of the home's siding for cohesion.

3. Solar-powered landscaping lights shine bright enough to make up or the removal of the hanging porch lantern.

2. Traditional Garage Revamp

This garage and entry, belonging to Laura Putnam of Finding Home, was in good shape but needed a slight facelift.

Laura used classic farmhouse-inspired accents to update the garage. She stayed away from anything too curved or ornate to match the lines of her home and the existing hardware.

Must-Have Elements

1. Love what you've got? Simply repaint or refinish your current assets for a brand new look. Laura repainted the door and lights.

2. Tall planters placed on either side of the garage doors offer symmetry and balance for a sophisticated feel.

3. Paving stones create a clean path to the entryway.

3. Fresh, Modern Makeover

When Jeran McConnel, of Oleander and Palm,  looked at her entry, she saw a flat space that lacked a focal point. Even though her home was built in the 1920s, Jeran opted for modern updates to rejuvenate the space.

Jeran paired a black and white colour palette with sleek geometric patterns (stripes, diamonds, pinwheels). Bonus: check out her stenciled message on the porch stairs.

1. Wall-hung planters in three rows make an cool statement.

2. DIY Project: Plant pots sparkle when painted with an of-the-moment metallic shade, such as copper.

3. Pillows, cushions, and area rugs add comfort to a streamlined outdoor space.

4. Cozy and Sweet Porch Transformation

To Amy Walton, of The Blissful Bee, her front porch was lacking in visual appeal and looked cluttered from the street. She wanted it to be a warm, cozy spot to welcome guests or sip hot chocolate on cool mornings.

Amy turned to texture—weathered wood, woven wicker, sleek metal, organic greens—to create the look she envisioned. Instead of the traditional entry pendant, she opted for a chandelier to give her front door a touch of luxe.

Must-Have Elements

1. Wicker chairs in a refreshing modern barrel design are the focal point of the porch.

2. Geometric patterns on the pillows and area rug keep the space looking on trend.

3. A white metal end table doesn't take up too much visual space.

5. Vintage-Style Entry Redo

Lesley Graham, of Lesley W. Graham, continued her home's modern farmhouse feel right on her front porch.

Her front entry already had style in spades (the cool aqua door, weathered red brick, and classic white siding), so only small additions were needed to up its style factor.
