You cannot lock this product with the key from outside. There is some seriously misleading marketing for this product. It is not a lock that is easy to operate. It is a spring loaded latch with a keyed release. Release...not lock. This information should be in the product name, description, and packaging. Not hidden in a Q&A section from other mislead buyers. I have two entrances to an area requiring locks so that we can exit and secure it. With this product, you must lock from the inside...and never leave. Or, install the product so you can reach through or over and operate the latch. At that point, anyone can push the inside latch release.

The slide switch has started locking itself sometimes. I've been locked out of my courtyard with a 6 foot fence while walking my dog or taking trash out. I've had to hide a key outside, so I'm not stuck, again.

The product is unique and there aren't many similar locks for outside gates that functions like this one - and the SmartKey feature it a good selling point for me as I have Kwikset Smartkey locks elsewhere on my property so I can just have 1 key for everything. Having said that, this product could use some major improvements. I hope they read this and take this into consideration in developing the next version: 1) As others have noted, the tolerances are a bit loose so that if you jiggle the locking bar or the gate enough, it will unlock. The spring loaded pin that keeps the locking bolt/bar in place is very loose and jiggly. 2) Use higher spring rate spring to return the latch opener. After only 8 months since new, here in the Seattle area (i.e. lots of rain), the plastic latch opener (that you press from the inside) gets stuck in the open position and does not return up. I have to use a screwdriver to slide it up. It seizes and it's due to poor design: A) Use a higher spring rate. There is a spring in that pushes the latch back up, but it's too weak. I replaced it with a higher spring rate spring. B) Change the way the latch interfaces with the back metal - such as put it on a guide to slide against, or some other way to reduce friction. I lubed the back and side of it with Super Lube (PTFE-based synthetic lube) so I hope it doesn't get stuck when water and moisture gets in there.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We recently moved out of our single family home into a townhouse. Our backyard is one of a few that is fenced in with privacy fence. Apparently there's a few nosey neighbors and the gate lock was broken. I got this smart key gate lock just in time. I caught a few neighbors trying to open it on our cameras with no success. It was very easy for my husband to install. The directions were clear and precise. I even had a handyman do some work and ask about it. The quality of the materials were great. Very sturdy, nothing looked damaged, we were able to assemble everything and have it set up in less than 20mins. It's easy to use and we are very happy with the results and the quality.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this smart key gate lock and love it! We have a gate and we're using a chain prior to this, but this smart key has made It safer and is easier then using the chain!! Would definitely recommend this for safety!
