Does not stand independently. It seems like the poles that fold on each side for traveling purposes are too small to provide the structure needed to make this sturdy and solid. It needs some sort of hook or other stabilizing component added to it. The only reason I didn’t return it immediately is that my cat loves it. The bummer part is that we have to hold it up for him to play in it. I think if they make some improvements to the structure, it will be great.
