It sounds like some customers are expecting too much or haven't read the description. This is a "temporary" solution, even though it is also billed as durable and long lasting. This is not intended to be a decorating highlight. I ordered two, cut them to fit, and they were lifesavers during construction/remodeling of a two-story home. While they will not fit tight to stairs without reinforcement, they do however stay pretty securely in place, and literally saved my cream carpeted stairs from potential extreme damage and wear from contractors, movers, and us during a very dirty period for the house. Caught so much dirt, washable, didn't look great, but served the purpose of temporarily protecting the carpet in a superior way. Due to the foam backing, it did not shift (not much - had to be periodically readjusted) under the feet of movers carrying hundreds of pounds upstairs with no tears or holes like plastic or paper. No need for damaging and difficult adhesive. When used as a temporary solution, an excellent option to protect your home. Only 4 stars just because it can shift and bunch a little and can't think of a real solution for that. Still, a lifesaver - was glad to pay the money to protect expensive carpet.

Extremely thin and gets dirty quickly, but it worked in the mean time until I was able to get the carpet redone.

This is super thin and does feel like felt. I does what I need it to do. I like that it is washable.
