Storey Behind the Art
Tibetan rug weaving has a long history that melds artistic and practical elements, incorporating geometric patterns, auspicious symbols, real and mythical creatures, and inspiration from the natural world. However, the commercial revival of Tibetan rug weaving gained significant traction after 1959, following the Chinese invasion of Tibet and the dispersion of Tibetan communities to Nepal and other regions. The 1970s marked a critical turning point when Tibetan rugs achieved global recognition, and Nepalese artisans played a pivotal role in meeting the burgeoning demand while safeguarding Tibetan rug weaving traditions. In contrast to the rug-making techniques prevalent in many parts of Asia, which rely on Turkish or Perzian knots to create the pile, Tibetan rugs are celebrated for their use of the Tibetan knot—a unique slit-loop technique. In this process, a continuous length of yarn is wrapped over a rod positioned across stretched warps on the loom. Once the rod is fully wrapped, a knife skillfully divides the wrapped yarn into two rows of pile tufts, resulting in a pile that offers depth, texture, and opulence. Traditional Tibetan rug motifs largely reflect the profound influence of Buddhism on Tibetan art and culture, with design elements borrowed from Chinese decorative traditions, including phoenixes, dragons, and lotus symbols, seamlessly integrated into the region's rich rug designs. In the modern era, Tibetan and Nepalese rugs, including those crafted by Tibetan refugees in Nepal, and Indo-Tibetan rugs produced in India, offer a diverse array of designs. These encompass Westernized adaptations of traditional Tibetan motifs, such as branching floral patterns and depictions of snow lions, as well as a vibrant mix of contemporary and eclectic free-form designs.
