How to Set Silverware on the Table
To help you learn how to set a table, we've outlined where to place each piece of silverware for both casual and formal occasions. Plus, we added table setting diagrams to help you visualize the silverware placement.
Casual Table Setting
If you're planning a casual lunch or a laid-back dinner, a basic table setting is a great choice. This table setting only uses three pieces of a flatware set: a dinner fork, a dinner knife, and a dinner spoon. With the dinner plate in the center, fold a napkin on the left side of the plate and place the dinner fork on top. On the right side of the plate, place the dinner knife with the blade facing the plate and the dinner spoon on the right.
Tip!
As a finishing touch, make sure that the bottom of each piece of flatware is level with the bottom of the plate. This helps ensure that the table setting looks neat and polished.
Formal Table Setting
Formal table settings are perfect for elevated events that have multiple courses. When setting the table for formal occasions, silverware placement is a key part of creating a beautiful presentation and a smooth dining experience.
Start with the charger plate at the center of each table setting. This decorative plate typically sits below a napkin, soup bowl, or salad plate before the dinner plate is served. Place a dinner fork and salad fork to the left of the charger with the salad fork on the outside. If there is limited space, the two forks can be placed on top of the napkin.
On the right side of the charger, lay the dinner knife with the blade facing toward the charger. Add a dinner spoon next to the dinner knife and a small seafood fork on the outside.
Above the charger, place a dessert fork and a dessert spoon horizontally. The spoon handle should face the right and the fork beneath should face the opposite direction. To the left of the dessert fork and spoon and above the two forks, top the bread plate with a butter knife.
