6 Large Wall Decorating Ideas
Embrace your creative side.
Wall decor is often the last element of a space a homeowner thinks about when decorating their home, especially when that wall is large and overwhelming. Below are six simple ways to solve your large-wall dilemma and give your home a finished, cohesive look.
1. Gallery Walls
Gallery walls allow for photos of family, friends, and special memories to be displayed throughout the home. There are two ways to design a gallery wall. The first way is a symmetrical gallery wall. A symmetrical gallery wall has consistent spacing and the frames are typically lined up directly on top and/or parallel to one another. This symmetry creates a simple and clean look for your large wall.
The second type of gallery wall is an asymmetrical gallery wall. Asymmetrical gallery walls allow for different size frames and varied spacing and can be organized in any way you prefer. Asymmetrical gallery walls tend to be easier to install, because the spacing doesn’t need to be exact.
If you want to take your gallery wall up a notch, add sconce lights to the sides or above the gallery wall. Adding sconce will not only add lighting to your room but will also add dimension to your gallery wall.
Large canvas wall art pieces are a simple and easy way to dress up the large wall you may be struggling with. Choose a canvas that is at least one-third the width of your total wall. This will ensure that the canvas is not too small for your wall. Do not be afraid to go even larger than one-third the width of the wall when it comes to canvas art.
Any DIYers out there? An accent wall might be just the right solution to your large-wall decorating problem. There are many types of accent walls, but wooden accent walls, wallpaper, and paint are the most popular. Accent walls create a focal point in a room by allowing patterns and colors to be the center of attention. The best spaces to add an accent wall are a breakfast nook area, behind your bed, a TV wall, or your fireplace wall. These spaces tend to be focal points already, so adding an accent wall will really give the space that wow factor.
4. Clocks
Oversized clocks are a very traditional way to decorate a large wall. Clocks are especially perfect for decorating walls above your stairway. Choose a clock that contains a metal you already have in your home and is at least one-third the size of the wall. This will create balance and give your space a cohesive feel.
Mirrors are another simple and easy wall decor option for large walls. Mirrors reflect light, so adding a mirror to your space will make the room feel brighter and more open. Mirrors tend to be used most often on dining room and entryway walls. Remember to use the one-third rule when it comes to mirrors as well.
Shelving is always a beautiful option for decorating a large wall. Floating shelves and ledge shelves can be used to display picture frames, plants, books, and more. Shelves can be stacked on top of each other or used as a single shelf to display taller items. Shelves are best used on walls behind a sofa, above your coffee bar, and anywhere you want to display picture frames. If you add shelving above a sofa or chair, be mindful of the shelf depth so that you and your guests will not bump your heads.
Tip:
When choosing wall decor for multiple walls in one room, make sure to mix and match wall decor types in a similar color scheme so that you can create cohesiveness but still give the space some variety.
