Create a balanced bedroom.

An unbalanced bedroom can affect your life in different ways, such as your health, relationships, and finances. Use your decor and furniture to create a positive flow of energy and a balanced, fêng shui bedroom.

What Is Fêng Shui?

Fêng shui is an ancient Chinese system of natural laws governing the orientation of the furniture and decor inside your home. The Chinese word “fêng” means “wind” and “shui” means “water.” Together these words symbolize the flow of life and energy that you have in your home.

5 Elements of Fêng Shui

It is said that when you have a balance of all five elements in your space, there is harmony in your home.

Wood: Wood is the power of creativity and growth. Wood can be represented in your space by adding in trees, plants, or even pops of green decor.

Fire: Fire is the most powerful element. Fire represents passion, energy, expansion, boldness, and transformation. If you are looking to add more of the fire element into your space, opt for candles or pops of red decor.

Earth:The element earth represents stability and strength. You can incorporate this into your bedroom by adding in rocks, carpets, old books, or any furniture or decor that is tan or brown.

Water: Water represents emotion and inspiration. Adding in pops of blue throughout your space will help incorporate the water element into your bedroom.

Metal: Metal unites all the elements together, bringing in focus and order. To add metal into your space, try adding in metal decor, table lamps, or white, silver, or gray colors

Placing Your Bed

Proper placement of your bed is crucial in creating the perfect energy in your bedroom. You’ll want to place it in a central but commanding position, meaning that your bed should face the door but not be directly in line with it. Keep your feet from pointing out the door, as this is known as the “coffin position.” If your room design calls for your bed to be right in front of the door, opt for a footboard. It acts as a buffer between your feet and the door to help protect your energy.

If you want to add in a ceiling fan or a chandelier, avoid hanging it directly over your bed. Keep the area above your bed clear, helping to protect the energy and let it flow around your bed easily. This also includes avoiding beams or sloped ceilings. Place your bed against a solid wall without doorways for a restful night of sleep.

Tip!

Instead of hanging one big chandelier over your bed, opt for two mini chandeliers and hang them above your nightstands.

Invest in a Headboard

Headboards represent stability and support in life and in your romantic relationships. Solid wood frames or solid upholstered headboards are perfect. We recommend staying away from metal headboards, as they aren't solid or supportive. Be sure to secure your headboard to your bed frame so that you will feel the support and strength from the headboard.

Think Soft

When choosing your sheets, throws, and comforters, think about choosing soft, inviting fabrics such as cotton or silk. Your bedroom should feel soft, cozy, and inviting. Think: blankets and throw pillows. Add a soft rug under your bed to add grounding energy to your bedroom.

Declutter

To keep the energy freely flowing around your bed, it’s important to declutter under your bed. It’s best to keep the area under your bed completely free of storage and accessories. Having items under your bed can affect your passive yin state while you are sleeping and can create a subconscious block due to the energy getting caught on your things. If you are tight on storage space and have to add items under your bed, stick to soft items that are related to your sleep, like blankets, linen sheets, and pillows.

Shop Pillows

Messy bedrooms can mess with the flow of energy in the room, even if your furniture is set up for a positive flow of energy. Take some time to find storage spaces for all of your items to help keep the energy high for the perfect fêng shui bedroom.

Reducing EMFs

An important element in getting good fêng shui in your bedroom is reducing the amount of electronic and magnetic fields in your space. Electronic devices are the most common culprits and can be extremely harmful to your quality of sleep. Keep your cell phone and other electronics out of your bedroom. (We suggest investing in an alarm clock and reading before bed instead of watching TV.)

If you do have a TV in your bedroom, put it in an armoire so when you are ready for bed, you can close off the TV, helping you get better sleep.

Pair It Up

If you are placing a nightstand next to your bed, make sure that you have a pair so you can have one on each side of the bed. It will balance the look of the room and will create storage space, ultimately creating more harmony.

Choose Color Wisely

Selecting colors will depend on your needs and what you are drawn to. A general rule of thumb is to keep the overall space feeling neutral, opting for warm neutral tones and shades you find in everyday nature. Then add in some bold warm and cool tones to create balance. If you feel that you want more passion, try adding in pops of red throughout your room. If you want more support and relaxation, opt for earthy colors, like green. If you need healing and vitality, try adding in pops of blue. If you want to attract a partner, opt for pinks and peaches, but use them sparingly. We recommend staying away from too much white because it is a metal element and can signify mental stimulation, making it hard to find restful sleep.

Add Artwork

Be selective about the art that you choose for your bedroom because it says a lot about the energy in your life. To invite partnership, choose a piece of art that displays pairs, like an image of two trees or two people, instead of art that displays a single object. You can also opt for two pieces of wall art to add a pair into the space. Hang the artwork either at eye level or slightly above, as this will help lift your energy. We recommend choosing artwork that features landscapes instead of water, because water cools fire and passion.

Limit Your Books

If you keep your collection of books in your bedroom and find yourself having trouble sleeping at night, try moving your bookcase into another space in your home. Books have active energy because they stimulate our minds. It’s okay to keep the current book you are reading on your nightstand, but keep your collection outside of the bedroom to keep the energy relaxed.

Think About Lighting

Light is an important nutrient for the body, but be aware of the quality of light you are putting in your bedroom. Choose a light that offers dimming capabilities, as this will help you mimic the timing of the sun.

Himalayan salt lamps are perfect for adding in energy, making your bedroom feel warm and inviting.

Candles are one of the best sources of light you can use to illuminate your bedroom, and if you opt for a natural candle, it can help purify the air and create a nourishing, sensual environment.
