Bed Blanket & Quilt Sizes
Choosing the right size blanket or quilt depends on a number of factors including the size of your bed, mattress depth, and the amount of coverage you prefer. Below, we’ve outlined some common sizes to choose from.
Baby: On average, baby blankets are about 34" W x 36" L but can range in size. If you’re choosing a quilt or blanket for crib bedding, be sure to measure your crib to find the right fit.
Twin: Twin blankets and quilts are around 66" W x 85" L and suitable for twin mattresses that measure 38" W x 75" L. These blankets are a good size for toddlers and children.
Twin XL: Twin XL blankets and quilts are typically 66" W x 90" L. Since twin XL mattresses are 38" W x 80" L – 5" longer than a standard twin mattress – the extra length on these quilts will ensure the right fit. Choose a twin XL blanket for taller children and growing teens.
Full/Double: Full-size blankets are 85" W x 90" L and suited for standard double mattresses that are 54" W x 75" L. Full-size blankets provide enough coverage for two adults, but it might be a tight fit.
Queen: Queen-size blankets are 90" wide and range from 90" – 100" in length. The corresponding mattresses are 60" W x 80" L – about 5" wider and longer than double beds. If you have an extra-deep mattress, you should opt for a larger blanket for better coverage.
King: King-size blankets are 108" wide, and like queen-size blankets, range in length from 90" – 100" to fit king beds that are 76" W x 80" L. The extra width on these blankets and quilts provides plenty of room for two adults.
California King: A California king mattress is 72" W x 84" L, slightly narrower and longer than a standard king size. Although this difference may seem small, we recommend that you get a blanket specifically suited to this mattress. A California king blanket is 104" W x 108" L.
Decorative throws differ in size from regular blankets because they are used more for visual display than providing warmth. The blanket size you decide on will potentially impact how it is used in your home. Here are the common measurements to consider:
Small: Small decorative throws are generally 40" W x 50" L. This compact size makes them perfect for draping over an accent chair or displaying on a blanket ladder.
Medium: Medium throws are about 50" W x 60" L and are a great middle ground if you’re looking for a versatile decorative blanket. Drape one over the back of your sofa for a polished look.
Large: Large decorative throws are 60" x 80" and can be displayed along the bottom of a bed or tossed over a large sofa. Large throws are the closest in size to a regular blanket, so they can double as an extra layer in addition to a decorative accent.
