When it comes to choosing lighting options for a room, it's not just the type and style of fixture you need to consider. The color temperature of a bulb also has the ability to influence the mood and functionality of a space, which is why you want to select the right option for each setting. Bright white vs soft white lights, in particular, have quite a dramatic effect on the atmosphere they produce. Keep reading to learn about the difference between these bulbs and where they are best used.

What Is Color Temperature?

If you've ever been shopping for lightbulbs, it's likely you'll have looked at features such as the shape and compatibility, as well as the wattage of bulbs. However, there is another category you need to consider – color temperature. This is important as it determines the color and intensity of light the bulb will emit.

Light is measured in Kelvins (K) which has a scale that ranges between 1,000K to 10,000K. The lower a color is on the scale, the warmer the light temperature (more of a yellow or red cast), while higher numbers have a cooler temperature (with a white or blue cast).

Tip!

Dimmers give you the option to change the intensity of light in a room, giving you added lighting flexibility.

Bright White vs. Soft White Light

As mentioned before, color temperature affects the ambience of a room – brighter feeling more balanced while softer white is more cozy. You'll want to select your color temperature based on the function of the room.

Before we begin, it's important to note the bright white and daylight bulbs are often used interchangeably, but they are different. Daylight is almost similar to sunlight (hence the name), with a temperature of around 5,000K to 6,000K, offering an almost blue hue that is extremely bright. Bright White

Measuring at around 3,500K and 4,100K, bright white light offers clear visibility without being too harsh. It is a neutral and balanced light that sits between warm and cool temperatures, offering a versatile and crisp illumination that can be used in a variety of settings:

Kitchen: Between prepping ingredients and washing dishes, bright white light provides crisp illumination for day-to-day tasks. These lightbulbs are great for a linear pendant above a kitchen island or wall sconce near the sink.

Bathroom: Give yourself a clearer view when grooming yourself or applying makeup in the bathroom with vanity lights. Both vanity lights and wall sconces provide a more well-rounded illumination that will enhance your visibility rather than relying on a more generalized overhead light.

Office: When in the office, you are typically at your desk, working on individual tasks such as reading, writing, or working on the computer. A desk lamp gives a localized brightness that allows you to easily focus with a brighter light.

Garage: Working in the garage often entails movement over multiple surfaces or a much larger table. While an overhead light will cast a broad glow in a wider space, you would do well to invest in adjustable swing-arm sconces to function as task lighting for finer and more detailed closeup work.

Entryway: Keep your entryway well-lit with a chandelier which will not only banish shadows but give guests a grand entry into your home. As for the exterior, use outdoor wall lighting to illuminate the steps, pathways, and doors for added visibility at night.

Bright white light is great for general purpose lighting and is often available in LED form, which is great for lowering energy consumption. It pairs particularly well with chrome fixtures.

Soft White

Coming in between 2,700K and 3,000K, soft white light is warm with a slightly yellow or golden cast that creates an inviting feeling without being too harsh. This temperature is not suited for tasks that require high visibility, but rather spaces in need of a more relaxing atmosphere:

Living Room: When it comes to more cozy lighting in the living room, opt for a floor lamp. You'll be able to more easily kick back and watch a movie in the softer glow, as opposed to an overhead fixture that lights up the entire space.

Dining Room: Pendant lighting will help create a more relaxed atmosphere while still allowing you to clearly see your food. This type of mood lighting will help provide a more welcoming feeling as everyone comes together to enjoy a meal.

Bedroom: Your bedroom is your sanctuary, where you come to end each day. A table lamp (or two) emits a warm hue that is better suited to winding down and sleeping. Plus, you won't have to get out of bed to shut off the overhead lights when you are ready for bed.

Soft white is often incandescent light which enhances warm earthy colors as well as complements wood grains. Read What Are Soft White Lightbulbs? for a more in-depth look.
