Charming Christmas village displays are endless fun for the whole family. Kids and adults alike can enjoy creating a unique village display that twinkles with life. If you're in need of some Christmas village ideas to help you get started, you've come to the right place. Though much of the creation of a mini holiday landscape is up to you and your creativity, we've outlined a few tips and tricks to keep in mind while setting up a Christmas village.

1. Pick the Right Surface

You don't want your beautiful Christmas village to take up much-needed workspaces in your home, like your kitchen counters or kitchen table. You also don't want to place it somewhere it can be easily knocked over by active pets or children. We recommend placing your Christmas village on a console table, mantel, or other accessory surface that is out of the way of your household's more active members.

2. Make a Map

With your surface chosen, it's time to start laying out your Christmas village. Some people like to just go with the flow and assemble freely, but others appreciate having a map or plan of action before they start. If you want to be absolutely sure the elements you're choosing will fit nicely on your surface, it might be fun to create a little map marked with the locations of each piece of your Christmas village. If you're going for a small-town vibe, make sure to leave room for roads!

3. Add Felt or Faux Snow

Before you begin setting up a Christmas village, it's a good idea to lay down a protective layer of fabric on your surface. Some people like to lay a thick layer of faux snow (stuffing or wispy cotton) first, but this might make it more difficult to place your Christmas village elements down flat. Instead, place your faux snow down after you place your large, main elements (buildings and roads) and before you place your accessory elements (trees, bushes, and villagers).

4. Create a Festive Theme

Choosing a common theme (candy, snow-covered, Victorian, gingerbread, etc.) or color scheme for each element in your Christmas village is an excellent idea if you'd like your Christmas village to look polished and cohesive. It also makes your choice of which elements to include a little easier, such as gingerbread houses or animals. Opt for a Christmas village set if you don't want to have to worry about combining elements from different themes. That said, feel free to incorporate elements from different themes – an eclectic Christmas village will be just as charming as a thematic one.

5. Play With Sizes

A Christmas village with buildings that are all the same height might be a little less interesting to look at than a village that incorporates buildings of varying heights. If your village could use some height, think about adding a church with a tall steeple, a mini ski slope, or elevated hiking trails. Break up taller sections of buildings with short trees or bushes.

6. Bring Your Christmas Village to Life

A lively Christmas village is infinitely more charming and interesting than a static one. Lighted Christmas village elements can give your village a lovely glow that will look especially cozy at night. Musical elements can give your Christmas village a jolly vibe that can set the mood of the rest of the space. Some Christmas village pieces are designed to hold incense or tea lights, which emit real smoke out of the buildings' charming little chimneys. Just keep in mind that non-battery-powered electric elements will need to be placed near outlets.
