The size of your coffee table can completely change the feel and functionality of your living room. From coffee table height to placement, this guide covers how to measure for a coffee table so that you can find the correct dimensions to fit seamlessly into your living room.

Step 1: Use Placement to Find the Right Coffee Table Width
When determining how wide your coffee table should be, it’s important to consider the placement so that you can maintain the flow and functionality of your space. To allow for easy maneuvering around your coffee table, we recommend leaving between 12" – 18" of space between the coffee table and the sofa. For comfortable foot traffic around the rest of your living room, we also recommend leaving 30" of space between the coffee table and other pieces of furniture, like a TV stand or entertainment center.
To find the best coffee table width, first measure the distance from your sofa to the opposite wall, TV stand, or other furnishings for your total available width. Then, subtract the space allowance (typically 42" to 48", ensuring at least 12" clearance on each side) to calculate your ideal coffee table width. For example, if the width between your sofa and furnishings on the other side of the room totals 100", you would subtract up to 48" from this number. Using this formula, 52" is the maximum coffee table width recommended for your seating area.
Coffee table widths are available in narrow (under 16"), standard (16" – 40"), and wide (over 40") widths. However, we recommend using the product page's "Weight & Dimensions" tab to get more specific measurements to ensure your chosen coffee table fits your space.
The length of your coffee table is also important to consider because it can influence the look and feel of the space. We recommend choosing a table that is approximately two-thirds the length of your sofa to create a proportionate look. A too-small coffee table can seem out of place, while one that’s too long can overwhelm the space and disrupt the natural flow.
To determine the best coffee table length for your space, start by measuring the total length of your sofa. Then, multiply the total measurement by two-thirds. The result is the recommended coffee table length for your sofa!
Coffee tables come in three different lengths: small (under 30"), standard (30" – 50"), and large (over 50"). For specific measurements, reference the "Weight & Dimensions" tab on a product's page.
The standard coffee table height is between 16" and 18" – however, we recommend choosing a coffee table height that pairs well with your sofa. Your coffee table height should be the same as your sofa cushions or 1" – 2" lower than your sofa for the most convenience. This creates a comfortable distance for reaching for items on your coffee table or resting your feet.
Coffee tables fit into three height categories: low (under 14"), standard (14" – 22"), and tall (over 22"). However, we recommend using the product page's "Weight & Dimensions" tab for specific coffee table dimensions.
You should also consider shape when deciding on the best size for a coffee table. The most popular coffee table shapes include round, square, rectangular, and oval – each well suited for different layouts and room sizes.
- Round: Round coffee tables are ideal for smaller living spaces because they don't have sharp corners to maneuver around.
- Square: Square coffee tables work well in larger living rooms that have more clearance for foot traffic or in the space between U- or L-shaped sectionals.
- Rectangle: Rectangular coffee tables have a lengthier profile that's perfect for long or narrow living spaces.
- Oval: Oval coffee tables offer a similar tabletop shape to rectangular designs, though their rounded edges make them even more small space–friendly.
