Counter Stool vs. Bar Stool: Which Seat Height Should I Choose?
Find the height best-suited for your kitchen.
Whether you're working on a renovation or looking for a way to revamp your kitchen, a new set of stools can transform the look and feel of your space. Getting the right seat height ensures that you can sit comfortably, so you might find yourself debating counter stools vs. bar stools. Our guide covers the difference between counter stools and bar stools to help you find the right one.
Bar Stool vs. Counter Stool
When comparing bar stools vs. counter stools, the main difference is the seat height (the distance between the floor and the seat).
- Bar Stools: Bar-height stools typically range between 28" and 30" tall, making them compatible with bars that are 40" to 42" tall. These stools are a suitable match for home bars or around pub tables. Because bar-height stools have a taller height, they sometimes feature footrests for added comfort.
- Counter Stools: On the other hand, as the name might suggest, counter-height stools are designed for countertops or kitchen islands (as seen in the photo above). With a slightly shorter height than bar-height stools, counter-height stools often measure 24" to 27" tall to match counters that are between 35" and 37" tall.
Though choosing a stylish design might be the most fun part of shopping for a stool, finding the right seat height is the key to comfort. Start by measuring the designated space with a tape measure. Take measurements of the space below the bar or countertop, recording the height, width, and depth. Subtract 10" to 12" from the height to account for the space you'll need between the top of the seat and the bottom of the counter or bar so that you can sit comfortably. These dimensions will help you determine which height is better suited for your space.
Both counter- and bar-height stools come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors, so you should choose the ones that fit your bar or kitchen counter.
