For any nursery, a glider is an essential piece of furniture. It's the perfect spot for relaxing while feeding your baby. A glider is an updated version of a traditional rocker that slides back and forth on a fixed track. For stability purposes, make sure your feet can touch the floor and there is plenty of support for your head and back. Find a glider that meets both your comfort and style needs with our breakdown of glider types, styles, and features.

Types of Gliders

There are two main types of gliders: wood and upholstered.

1. Wood Gliders * There are six primary styles for wood gliders: bow, sleigh, transitional, curved, grand, and two-post.

  • Typically, wood styles takes up less space than upholstered gliders.
  • Most come with removable cushions, however make sure to check the specifications to see if the cushions are machine washable.
  • Additional features to look for include padded armrests with pockets and lumbar support for your back.

2. Upholstered Gliders * Upholstered gliders offer maximum cushioning and a wide variety of styles, fabrics, and patterns.

  • Compared to a wood glider, upholstered options offer a plush, comfortable place to sit.
  • Consider a glider that comes with a built-in foot rest for a convenient, space-saving alternative toan ottoman.

Tip!

Most gliders feature a 360-degree swivel. This handy design allows parents to easily watch their children run and play around the room while still sitting down.
