How to Hang a Planter from a Ceiling

1. Mark a Spot

Mark the spot where you want your planter to hang. Keep in mind the weight requirements for the plant you want to hang there. If you’re hanging more than one plant in the same area, make sure you space out the holes accordingly.

2. Drill the First Hole

Drill a pilot hole with the drill bit. Make sure your bit is slightly smaller than the screw of your hook. This ensures that the hook will fit securely.

3. Install the Screw

Screw the hook into the ceiling beam or joist you found using your stud finder. Use either a hook screw or a J-screw for this location.

4. Hang Your Plant

Bear in mind the weight limitations of the screw you used. For example, light plants such as orchids don’t require as much force to hold versus something heavy like ivy.

How to Hang a Planter on a Wall

If you don’t have the means to suspend your planter from the ceiling, here’s how to hang a planter on a wall. Using your stud finder, locate the stud in the wall to ensure the hook can bear the weight of the planter. Drill a hole for your wall-specific plant hook, and install the hanger. Rest your pot in its holder or hang directly from the hook.

Tip!

If you don’t have a drill or are looking for a renter-friendly option, suspend a tension rod from wall to wall and hang planters from an S-hook. Shower tension rods are thicker and sturdier than curtain tension rods, which often have weight capacities below a pound.
