How to Hang a Rug on the Wall
We’re bringing decor from the ground up.
Have you ever thought about hanging an area rug on the wall? Whether you have a gorgeous piece you bought on your travels or want to spruce up your wall decor, hanging a rug on the wall is a great way to accessorize your home. Trying to figure out how to hang a rug on the wall? In this guide, we’re giving you three ways to do it.
Method 1: Hook & Loop Fabric Fasteners
Fabric fasteners are an excellent way to hang your wall rug decor since the hook-and-loop construction is sturdy and can hold rugs with a heavier weight. Another plus is that these self-adhesive fasteners won’t damage your walls.
There are two main components to fabric fasteners when using them for your area rug: the strip that attaches to the rug and the strip that attaches to the wall. Here’s how to hang a rug on the wall with the help of self-adhesive hook-and-loop strips.
Step 1: Attach the Strips to Rug
What makes fabric fasteners a great option for wall rug decor is that the sticky backing acts as an adhesive that adheres to the rug and wall for easy attachment. Start by taking the side with the loops and peeling off the covering on the back.
Attach the sticky side to the back of your area rug along the edge of the corners. You can place two strips along the top two corners or place a strip on all four corners for extra security.
Step 2: Take Measurements
Before attaching the rug to the wall, measure the distance between the strips you've placed on the rug to ensure you have correct measurements to help you line the strips up correctly. Write the measurements down and use them to mark the wall where you will place the other set of strips.
Step 3: Attach Rug to Your Wall
With the looped side attached to the back of your rug, take the hook tape and peel the covering off the back to reveal the sticky side. Press the sticky side of the strip flat on the wall where you marked the measurements you took in the previous step.
When you've attached the strips to the wall, take the back of your rug and press it against the hook strips. The loop tape on every corner should connect with the hook tape strips to secure the hook-and-loop strips together to display your area rug on the wall.
Method 2: Curtain Rod
Curtain rods are another method for hanging an area rug on the wall but require mounting the brackets into the wall. A curtain rod adds more dimension to your wall rug decor with its finish and decorative ends.
Step 1: Locate or Attach a Rug Casing
The first step in hanging an area rug with a curtain rod is adding a rug casing to the back of a rug if your rug doesn’t already have one. A rug casing is a sliver of fabric on the back of the rug that forms a tube that you will later slide your rod through so that you can mount it to the brackets.
If your rug does not already have a casing, here’s how to attach your own:
Take an unbleached strip of muslin fabric and sew it to the back of your area rug. The strip of muslin needs to be thin and lengthy enough to stretch across the back of your rug. Muslin is needed to keep the rug from coming into contact with the rod and possibly damaging it.
Next, sew a strip of heavy cotton over your muslin to form a tube. This strip should be as long as your muslin backing.
Step 2: Slide Curtain Rod in Casing
Once you’ve located your casing or created your own, it’s time to insert your rod. Take your curtain rod out of its packaging and slide it through the casing. Extend the rod out of the edges of your rug by a few inches to showcase the decorative ends.
Tip!
Make sure you choose a rod capable of holding your rug’s weight. Read the specifications of your curtain rod to determine how much weight it can hold.
Step 3: Secure the Rod Mounting Hardware
With your curtain rod secured inside the casing, now begin mounting the rod’s hardware to the wall. Follow the instructions in your rod’s manual carefully to mount the brackets with the included screws.
Step 4: Attach Rod to Hardware
Once your hardware is properly secured, it’s time to attach your rod to the mounting bracket and display your area rug as unique wall decor.
Method 3: Curtain Clips
One of our favorite ways for hanging an area rug is with the help of curtain clips. This method is very similar to the previous but doesn’t require sewing a casing onto the rug. All that’s needed is a curtain rod and clips to display your area rug.
Step 1: Measure the Top of Your Rug
Use a tape measure to measure the length of the top of your rug. In the next step, you will use this measurement to determine the placement of your clips. Write the measurement down or keep it in mind as you move on to the second step.
Step 2: Attach Clips Evenly Along Rug
Taking the length you collected, use your curtain clips to attach them evenly across the top of your rug. This will make your clips look neatly arranged.
Step 3: Install Brackets to the Wall
Once all of your clips are attached on your rug, it’s time to install the mounting hardware to the wall. Just as you would in the previous method, read your curtain rod’s instructions for accurate installation.
Step 4: Slide Clips onto the Rod
With your brackets in place, take the clips that are attached to your rug and slide your rod through the open circles at the top of the clips. Then, take your rod and secure it in the brackets to showcase your wall rug decor.
