Tools Required

Step 1: Locate the Installation Site

Before you begin drilling, choose the area in the room(s) where you want to install your curtains. Think about your reason for installing curtains on the ceiling. Do you want to create the illusion of a larger room, or to separate a designated area? Choosing the installation site ahead of time ensures you're happy with the result.

Step 2: Measure Your Space

Next, measure the walls of your installation site. Use your tape measure to find the distance between the ceiling and floor. If you want your curtains to touch the floor after installation, choose a curtain size that is 1 to 2 inches longer than your floor-to-ceiling measurement.

Step 3: Level Your Track or Rods

For a Flexible Curtain Track: Take your curtain track and bend it into your desired shape. Then set up your ladder, grab your pencil, and hold the track 2 to 4 inches from the ceiling to check if the spot is level. This location will work for installation if the track sits flush against the ceiling.

For a Curtain Rod: Be sure that the brackets you choose for your rods can support the weight of your curtains – check manufacturer specifications for the brackets’ weight limit. Then, place your curtain rod brackets against the wall roughly 4 to 6 inches from the ceiling. Use your ruler or tape measure to ensure that the space between the bracket is level – this way, the rod will be straight after installation.

Step 4: Mark the Ceiling

For a Flexible Curtain Track: Your brackets will have holes where the drill bits should go. Using a pencil, mark the location of the holes on your wall by making small dots in the centers of the bracket holes.

For a Curtain Rod: Following the same flexible curtain track procedure, mark your bracket holes so that the rod will sit level after installation.

Step 5: Install Your Brackets

For a Flexible Curtain Track: Grab your power drill and bits. Drill through the pencil markings to form holes in the ceiling where your brackets will go. Align the brackets and holes, then use screws to secure them in place, ensuring the brackets are securely attached to the ceiling.

For a Curtain Rod: Use your power drill to create holes in the ceiling where you marked it – this is where you will install the curtain rod brackets. Then, secure your brackets to the holes with screws, making sure they are securely attached to the wall.

Step 6: Attach the Track or Rod to Its Brackets

For a Flexible Curtain Track: After the brackets are installed, slide the curtain track into place. If your ceiling track has hooks, attach them to the track accordingly.

For a Curtain Rod: Slide your curtain rings onto the rod. Then, place the rod onto your installed brackets. Now, you’re all done!

Step 7: Hang Your Curtains

For a Flexible Curtain Track: Finally, attach your curtains to the track or hooks to complete the process. If you’re using a track, slide the curtain’s rings onto the track rod. Then, you’re all done!
