How to Install a Screen Door
Learn how to measure for a screen door and how to actually install one thanks to the steps below.
What You’ll Need
Here are all the tools and materials you’ll need when installing a screen door:
Tape measure
Power drill
New screen door kit
Pencil
Handles and hardware (if not included)
Step 1: Measure Your Current Door
Before you remove your current door, you’ll need to gather its exact measurements. This takes the guesswork out of the shopping process since you’ll know the right size to shop for.
To measure your current screen door, you’ll need to grab a tape measure to gather the height and width of your door jamb. Follow the tips below to collect each measurement:
Width: Measure the door jamb horizontally by placing the end of your measuring tape one side and drag the tape to the other side.
Height: Put the end of your tape at the top of your door jamb and drag down to the bottom to measure vertically.
Subtract a quarter inch from both measurements to ensure a tighter, proper fit.
Step 2: Shop for a New Door
Now that you have your measurements, you can shop in confidence for your new screen door. If it’s been a while since you’ve updated your screen door, browse between the hottest new styles like double-door configuration, prehung, or sliding installation.
Step 3: Remove the Old Door
Once your new screen door has arrived, you can remove your old door. This involves the help of a drill to unscrew the screws holding the door in place on the hinges. Once all of the screws are out, remove the door carefully so you don’t damage the seal and have other areas to replace.
Step 4: Place New Door in Opening
When your old door is completely removed, place your new door in the opening. Check to make sure everything is aligned and fits correctly. When you place your new door in the opening, put the side the hinges will be attached to on the opposite you want the door to open from. For instance, if you want your door to open on the right, the side with the hinges needs to be on the left, and vice versa.
If your door has a snug fit and there’s no visible gaps, then you can proceed to the next step. If you notice visible gaps, it’s possible that your measurements are off and you’ll need to return your door for the correct measurements.
Step 5: Install the Hinges
Now it’s time to begin installing your screen door. Locate the location on your door where your hinges need to go and mark the hole with a pencil. Use your power drill to make holes in each marked spot where you will install your screws later on.
Once all the holes are marked, place your hinges along the door and edge of the frame. Make sure the hinges align with your holes and begin installing with screws into the door and frame.
Step 6: Attach Handle & Latch
After your new screen door is installed, you’ll need to install the hardware. Most screen doors come with hardware, but if yours doesn’t, be sure to select your pieces to arrive at a similar time as your door. Attaching your hardware requires following the kit's instructions to make sure you place the handle and latch in the right location. You will need your pencil to mark the location and power drill to install the pieces. Then, you can enjoy your new screen door!
