Before You Begin Your Peel-&-Stick Backsplash DIY

Before you can begin your installation, you'll need to get some measurements to order the correct amount of backsplash for your needs. Begin by measuring the length and width of the space you'll be covering. Multiply those two measurements together to get the area – this number is equal to the square footage of tiles you need. You should then add another 10% – 15% to this number to account for any mistakes that may occur during the tile installation, particularly if you are a beginner.

How to Install Peel-&-Stick Backsplash

Step 1: Clean the Walls

Since years of smoke and grease can be absorbed by your walls, use the sponge, soap, and water to deep clean the area where you'll put your backsplash. Let your wall completely dry first. Now you can move onto learning how to install peel-and-stick backsplash.

Step 2: Cut the Paper

Next you need to cut the jagged edge off your first piece of tile using scissors. Use your pencil and ruler to draw straight lines for accurate cutting.

Step 3: Do a Mock Layout

Just like when you work with real tiles, you might want to lay out your tiles to get an idea of what they look like. This will also help you anticipate any windows, outlets, or unusual features you need to account for. It can also help you better see how the pattern will appear and allow you to adjust it before you permanently place the peel-and-stick tile backsplash.

Step 4: Start Laying the Tiles

Peel the back paper off your tile to reveal the adhesive and begin to lay the first square starting from a bottom corner or your choice. If your backsplash tile has a specific pattern, be mindful about replicating that design correctly, evenly, and in a way that displays it the best.

Tip!

Use the straight corners from cabinets and countertops to help guide you and ensure you maintain a straight line.

Step 5: Smooth the Tiles

Once each section of tile is in place, press it firmly and smooth it with your hand. This will help to prevent any inconsistencies and bumps as well keep the paper from lifting up and coming off too easily.

Step 6: Continue Sticking

Once the first piece is secure, you can peel the backing off your next piece of tile. Working horizontally, place it next to the first section, making sure it's aligned properly. Once the tile is in place, press and smooth it out as before.

Tip!

If you reach a point where you can't fit a whole tile into your space, or you need to accommodate an outlet or window, use scissors or a tile cutter to adjust the size of your tile. Before cutting the tile, measure the remaining wall space and use that measurement to mark your tile with a pencil. Then cut your tile to the marked size and stick it onto the wall.

Step 7: Complete the Process

Continue this process until your wall is covered. As you go, press the tiles down to ensure there are no air bubbles and all the tiles are lying flat and uniformly. When you have finished sticking everything down, take a damp sponge and wipe them all clean so you have a fresh and clear display of all your hard work.

Now that you know how to install peel-and-stick backsplash, you can take a look at some options for your upcoming DIY project.
