Making a cappuccino is simpler than you may think – by following a few easy steps, you can make this delicious beverage in the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re a daily coffee drinker or a new to this rich espresso drink, continue reading for everything you need to know about how to make a cappuccino.
What's in a Cappuccino?
What’s in a cappuccino, exactly? A coffeehouse staple, this Italian drink is equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. An espresso shot serves as the cappuccino recipe’s base, then milk is added to soften its sharp flavor – while whole milk is the traditional pick for its thick consistency, you can use any milk of your choice. Finally, the drink is topped with the steamed milk’s foam, frothed for an airy texture. While the typical cappuccino includes one-third of each component, you can modify these proportions to your preference. For optional flavoring, add a sweetener, like sugar, honey, or maple syrup.
Essential Cappuccino Equipment
The correct equipment is essential in order to make a homemade cappuccino – keep reading to see everything you’ll need after assembling your cappuccino ingredients.
- Coffee Grinder: Freshly-ground coffee beans create a bold espresso flavor. Some espresso machines include a built-in grinder, while standalone coffee grinders are another great alternative.
- Tamper: The tamper is designed to pack your coffee grounds into the espresso machine’s basket.
- Espresso Machine: This machine is a homemade cappuccino’s key component – it brews the strong espresso shot that serves as the beverage’s base.
- Milk Frother or Steam Wand: Many espresso machines include a steam wand attachment that heats your milk and creates its foamy texture. However, handheld milk frothers can also be used to achieve this result.
- Thermometer: A cooking thermometer helps you heat your milk to an ideal 150°F.

How to Make a Cappuccino
These steps break down exactly how to make a cappuccino at home, from grinding your coffee beans to enjoying the first foamy sip.
1. Prepare Your Espresso
- Fill the Water Reservoir: The first step to making espresso is adding water to the machine’s reservoir. Open the water tank and fill it to the designated line before closing its lid.
- Grind Your Coffee Beans: If your espresso machine includes a built-in grinder, add your beans to the hopper, then set it to a fine grind. If you’re using a standalone burr grinder, grind 18–20 grams of coffee beans on its fine grind setting.
- Tamp Your Coffee Grounds: Add the coffee grounds to your espresso machine’s portafilter, the handle-equipped basket that stores your coffee for brewing. Then use a tamper to firmly compress them.
- Brew the Espresso: Fasten the portafilter to your espresso machine and choose between a single or double shot by pressing your machine’s corresponding button – your espresso machine automatically adjusts the amount of water used to match the shot option you select. If you’re including a sweetener, add it to your espresso immediately after brewing, then stir – the hot temperature properly dissolves your sweetener to maintain a consistent texture.

2. Steam Your Milk
- Prepare Your Milk: Use the frothing pitcher that usually comes with your espresso machine or a measuring cup. Pour your milk of choice into the pitcher or cup, filling it roughly halfway. If your machine includes an automatic frother, follow the instructions for adding milk to the correct reservoir for frothing.
- Position the Wand: Gently drop the top of your machine’s steam wand or the standalone frother into the milk, just below its surface. Angle it toward the pitcher or cup’s side – the off-center placement causes a vortex effect, creating the milk’s silky texture.
- Steam the Milk: If you’re using a steam wand, turn on your espresso machine’s steam function, typically a labeled dial or button. Submerge your wand into the milk, ensuring it remains just below the surface – this placement incorporates air into the milk to create its topmost layer of foam. Heat the milk to about 150°F, using a thermometer to measure the temperature. This process usually takes 30 to 60 seconds. If you’re using a standalone frother, add your milk to its reservoir before selecting the steam function – the machine will automatically heat the milk to the correct temperature while aerating it to create the same top layer of foam.
3. Assemble Your Cappuccino
Pour Your Espresso: Pour your espresso shot into a cappuccino cup or your favorite mug.
Add Your Steamed Milk: Tilt your frothing pitcher or measuring cup to pour the steamed milk into your espresso, using a spoon to hold back the foam.
Top With Foam: Finally, use the spoon to scoop your milk foam from the pitcher, gently layering it onto your cappuccino. Now, you’re ready to enjoy!
