The traditional plug-in coffee maker has become a mandatory kitchen staple, and although the need for a caffeine fix is always there, the appliance isn't. Whether you’re staying at an Airbnb, out on a camping trip, or in a pinch when the power goes out, here’s how to make coffee without a coffee maker.
1. French Press
The French press is one way to make coffee without a coffee maker. Start by spooning coarsely ground beans in the bottom of the carafe and then pour just enough hot water to saturate the grounds. Follow with boiling water to fill the remainder of the carafe, and then add the top. Wait four minutes, and then slowly depress the plunger to strain. The chrome-plated steel frame helps to preheat the glass and disperse the temperature evenly. In it’s classic design, the glass beaker is an aesthetically pleasing addition to the breakfast table, while a French press with a stainless steel or ceramic body retains its heat and is more likely to last a long time.
For a quicker gratification, there’s the pour-over method. Combine coffee grounds and a damp filter and place it over the carafe. Slowly pour hot water over the grounds and watch the brewed coffee drip down into the glass carafe through a filter. This simulates the same effect and bold taste of a drip coffee maker, plus it’s ready to serve in just 3–4 minutes.
Making coffee using tea kettle with an included infuser will give you a full-bodied coffee that tastes very similar to French press coffee. A bit more flavorful than a pour over, steeping the grounds in hot water with a tea infuser results in the same smooth flavor without the added hassle of a filter. Simply add coarse coffee grounds into a tea infuser, like you would regular tea leaves, and then steep the infuser in the hot tea kettle for five minutes.

4. Make Dalgona AKA Whipped Coffee
An internet trend that reached its peak during the pandemic, Dalgona coffee, or whipped coffee, is an easy way to learn how to make coffee without a coffee maker. Whip together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water using a handheld milk frother for the fluffiest results and pour over ice and milk.

5. “Cowboy Coffee”
One of the more rudimentary ways to make coffee without a coffee maker, the “cowboy coffee” method comes from combining water and coffee grounds in a pan and heating them over an open flame. Then, strain the coffee into a mug – don’t worry, most of the grounds end up sticking to the pan.

6. Stovetop Percolator
Making a whopping eight cups, the stovetop percolator is another great option for an outlet-free coffee maker. Placed right on the stove, the grounds and boiling water undergo a process called “perking” up until the mixture’s boiling point.

7. Turkish Coffee
The Turkish coffee pot (called a Cezve) comes in three sizes: 6 ounces, 12 ounces, and 24 ounces. Combine the desired amount of sugar, water, and finely ground Turkish coffee beans into the pot. Stir the ingredients briefly and then place the pot on the stovetop. You’ll want to bring the pot to a boil slowly over medium heat, about 3–4 minutes. Spoon some darkened foam into the coffee cup and then pour the remaining coffee up to the rim. Enjoy!
