For a cold foam consistency that’s closest to what you’d get at your nearest coffee shop, we highly recommend using a milk frother. Here’s our favorite cold foam recipe and how to make it quickly and easily with this kitchen essential.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials & Ingredients

Before you start creating your homemade cold foam, make sure you have the right materials and ingredients on hand. To make cold foam like a barista, you will need the following:

Materials:

  • Mason jar
  • Milk frother

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup skim milk
  • 1 teaspoon simple syrup
  • 1 drop of vanilla extract (optional)

Step 2: Pour Your Milk & Simple Syrup

Once all your materials and ingredients are out, pour your milk into your mason jar. Next, measure out your simple syrup then pour that in with the milk as well.

Skim milk is the best milk to use for a cold foam recipe since the milk isn’t too fatty since it contains less fat or cream, which helps it to whip up into its thick goodness. If you do need non-dairy substitutions, you can use coconut cream or plant-based options.

Step 3: Add Any Flavor Extras

If you want a little flavor pop – like vanilla – in your cold foam, add a drop of vanilla extract or any other flavor of choice you like.

Step 4: Froth the Milk

When all of your milk, syrups, and flavors have been added, submerge your milk frother into the liquid. Turn on your frother and let it mix the ingredients together for at least 15 to 20 seconds or until it starts to thicken. As you start to froth the milk, slowly pull your frother to the top of the milk until it’s completely thickened.

Step 5: Add to Your Coffee

When your milk is frothed and formed into cold foam, use a spatula to transfer the topping onto your coffee drink of choice. A spatula works best to get all the foam out of the jar since it’s flat and can easily scrape the sides and bottom.

How to Make Cold Foam at Home Without a Frother

In a pinch to make this creamy goodness, but still waiting for your frother to arrive? Never fear! Here’s how to make cold foam at home without a frother for the time being.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials & Ingredients

Making cold foam at home without a frother is just as simple, but you’ll need a few different materials. In place of a milk frother, you can use either a mason jar, a whisk, or a blender. Your milk, syrup, and vanilla extract measurements will stay the same.

Step 2: Pour the Milk & Simple Syrup

Following the same instructions from the previous section, pour the milk and simple syrup into your mason jar or blender if using those methods. If you are using the whisk method, you will need a small mixing bowl for enough room to move the whisk – pour the whisk into this bowl.

Step 3: Add Any Flavor Extras

Once your milk and syrup have been added to the jar, bowl, or blender, now is the time to add any extra flavors you want in your cold foam.

Step 4: Froth the Milk

Now it’s time to make the cold foam! Here’s how to whip up the thick fluff with each method:

Mason Jar: Twist the lid on tightly. Shake the jar vigorously for one to two minutes or until you see cold foam start to form.

Whisk: Grab your whisk in one hand and the rim of the bowl securely with the other. Begin whisking the mixture for at least 45 seconds continuously until you’ve reached a thick consistency.

Blender: Secure the lid on the top of the blender. Turn the blender on high for at least 45 seconds or until the milk has thickened.

Step 5: Add to Your Coffee

Once your method has whipped up a thick cold foam, use a spatula to scrape it out of the jar, bowl, or blender and onto the top of your coffee.
