How to Measure an Armoire

The dimensions of an armoire will affect its storage capacity and determine if it will fit in your space. Follow these steps to learn how to measure an armoire so that it will suit your storage needs while fitting seamlessly in your home:

Step 1: Measure the Width

Armoires can range in width from 30" – 72" depending on the amount of storage you require. Narrow armoires are usually around 32" wide and feature a set of narrow double doors and a clothing rod. Armoires that offer additional storage compartments may be 48" – 60" in width to accommodate vertical shelves or longer clothing rods. Whatever size you decide, be sure to measure the intended place in your home to ensure the armoire will fit – taking care to ensure it won’t obstruct doorways or windows.

Step 2: Measure the Height

Standard armoires are between 66" – 72" tall to provide adequate room for hanging garments while also fitting in rooms with standard 96" ceilings. However, they can come as short as 54" and as tall as 80" to fit in rooms with low or high ceilings, respectively. When deciding on the height of your armoire, take into consideration the height of your ceilings and the length of your hanging garments to ensure a proper fit.

Step 3: Measure the Depth

In general, armoires are around 18" – 20" deep and are designed to fit standard 17" clothes hangers. The depth measurement will also determine how far the armoire will come out from the wall – you don’t want one that’s too deep and may obstruct doors or walkways. When measuring the intended space for your armoire, also consider its total depth when the doors and drawers are open. For easy access to your clothes, make sure there is enough room in front of your armoire to open all the compartments without bumping into other furniture.
