How to Measure for Outdoor Furniture Covers

Read on for easy-to-follow instructions on how to measure chairs, dining sets, and patio accessories to determine the right size outdoor furniture covers.
1. How to Measure for Outdoor Seat Covers
When measuring for armchair, chaise lounge, or sofa covers, find the height, depth, and width of your seating. Then, compare your measurements to the dimensions listed in the seat covers’ product descriptions.
1. Measure the width: Measure the distance across the seating from left to right, including the stretch of the arms.
2. Measure the depth: Measure from the front edge of the front leg to the deepest point of the back leg. If the chair back is reclined and extends past the back leg, measure to that point.
3. Measure the height: Measure from the top of the seat back all the way to the ground to find the height of the seating.
To find the right size dining set covers, you will also need to know your furniture’s height, depth, and width. If you plan to cover your seating, be sure to account for your dining chair backs while measuring. If your table is round, you only need to measure its height and diameter.
1. Measure the width: Measure your tabletop from left to right (on its longest edge) to find the width of your table. If you are covering your dining chairs too, start and end this measurement from the chair backs on either end of the table.
2. Measure the depth: Measure the shorter edge of your tabletop from left to right to find your table’s depth. If your table is square, the width and depth should be the same measurement.
3. Measure the diameter: If you have a round table, measure for the diameter. To do this, simply measure across the center of the table from one side to the other. If you’re covering a complete dining set, be sure to include the chair backs in this measurement for a proper fit.
4. Measure the height: Measure from the top of the table, or seat back, all the way to the ground for the dining set’s height.
For unique shaped outdoor accessories like fire pits or air-conditioning units, apply the same method of measuring according to the object's diameter or length, width, and height, and select a cover that will accommodate the dimensions.
1. Measure the width: Measure your object from left to right (on its longest edge) to find the width.
2. Measure the depth: Measure the shorter edge of your tabletop from left to right to find your table’s depth.
3. Measure the diameter: If your object is round, simply measure for the diameter. To do this, measure across the center of the object from one side to the other.
4. Measure the height: Measure from the top of the table or seat back, all the way to the ground for the object’s height.
4. How to Measure for Patio Umbrella Covers
For patio umbrella covers, measure the length and the width of the closed umbrella canopy. Be sure to choose a cover that is specified for your umbrella type – either a market umbrella, which has a straight pole, or a cantilever umbrella, which has a curved or angled pole.
1. Measure the height: Close the umbrella completely and measure from the top of the pole to the button of the umbrella canopy (the fabric part).
2. Measure the width: With the umbrella completely closed, measure the bottom widest part of the canopy. If you have a cantilever umbrella with a curved pole, include this in your width to ensure the cover is wide enough.
