Framing your seating area with a rug can have a big impact on your space if you do it right. But how do you place an area rug under a sectional? Check out these living room rug sizes and layout recommendations to help you furnish your floors with confidence.

1. Decide on the Ideal Rug Placement

The right rug placement is best determined by the size and shape of your sectional as well as the layout of your living room. From L-shaped to curved sectionals, here are four arrangements that’ll suit your space.

Rug Placement for Sofa & Chaise Sectionals

Rectangular area rugs are the best option for under standard sofa-and-chaise sectionals. There are multiple sizing and placement options to create a balanced look depending on the size of your room:

  • For larger rooms and open concept spaces, opt for a large 9' × 12' area rug that surrounds the entire sectional for a curated and sophisticated look.
  • Standard living rooms could do with a 8' × 10' area rug centered under your sectional. Aim to keep the front legs of your sectional on the rug for visual balance.
  • If you have a small living room, opt for a 6' × 9' area rug and align it with the outer edge of the chaise, still encompassing the front legs of the sofa. This will cover the floor inside the seating area and give it a cozy feel.

Rug Placement for L-Shaped Corner Sectionals

Square and round rugs work well with L-shaped sectionals because they mirror the symmetry of corner sectionals, centering the seating area and creating visual harmony in your living room. Consider these popular rug sizes for a corner sectional arrangement:

  • For smaller corner sectionals, a 7' or 8' square or round area rug will fill the space inside the seating area without too much overhang.
  • Opt for a 9' or 10' square or round area rug for a standard-size corner sectional or average living room.
  • For extra-large sectionals or if you want to encompass a larger seating area, consider sizing up to a 12' square or round area rug under your sectional.

Rug Placement for U-Shaped Sectionals

U-shaped sectionals are some of the largest sectionals available and will likely require a large area rug underneath to maintain a balanced look. You can opt for either a rectangular or square area rug to fill the seating area, depending on how much overhang you prefer. Here are some common area rug sizes to consider:

  • A 9' × 12' rectangular area rug is probably the minimum size for a U-shaped sectional, though a 10' × 14' will likely be the best fit for balanced visuals.
  • If you’re working with an extra-spacious living room and a large U-shaped sectional, you may want to consider upgrading to a 12' x 15' rug for expansive coverage.
  • When choosing a square area rug, try a 10' rug to fill the inside of your sectional or a 12' rug to fit oversized seating areas.

Rug Placement for Curved Sectionals

When it comes to placing an area rug under a curved sectional, you want to fill the space on the inside of the curve so the placement feels intentional. Rectangular and round area rugs work the best for these layouts, with different sizes designed to suit the length of your sectionals:

  • Rectangular area rugs will create visual contrast against a curved sofa and provide structure to your living room. You want to rug to encompass the front legs of your sectional. A 9' × 12' rug should do the trick, though a 10' × 14' might be best for large curved sectionals.
  • Round area rugs echo the curve of your sectional. For intentional placement, center the area rug around your coffee table and under the front legs of the sofa. A 10' or 12' round area rug should fit.

2. Measure Your Sectional & Room

Now that you’ve determined the area rug layout you’re going for, it’s important to get the exact measurements of your sectional and living room to make sure the rug will be the right fit. Here are some general rules of thumb to keep in mind when choosing an area rug in proportion to your space and furniture:

  • Measure the overall width and depth of your sectional, including the chaise and corner seats. Choose a rug that is long enough to encompass the front legs of your sectional and wide enough to extend at least 6" – 12" beyond the chaise or front-most edge of the sofa.
  • Leave at least 12" – 18" of exposed floor space between the edge of your rug and each wall to avoid a cramped feeling in the room, though it is acceptable to leave 8" – 10" in smaller living rooms.

3. Choose a Rug Style That Works

Once you know the size and placement of your living room area rug, the fun can begin! You’ll want to choose a rug that works in your space both functionally and stylistically. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Thin pile-height area rugs tend to work best under sectionals. They are well-suited for heavy foot traffic, provide a stable foundation for your furniture to prevent wobbling, and are easy to clean for everyday convenience.
