How to Plan Your Patio Seating Space
Patio planning made simple.
Make the most of the warmer months by setting up your patio furniture for optimal comfort and style. Read on for a step-by-step overview of patio furniture space planning.
1. Measure Your Patio
Begin by measuring your patio to determine whether it is considered small, medium, or large and to see how many furniture pieces can comfortably fit in your space.
- Find the square footage: Measure the length and width of your patio and multiply these measurements to find its total square footage. If you have a rounded patio, measure for the largest square or rectangle that fits within its circumference to get a usable measurement.
- Create a mock layout: Use painter’s tape or chalk to designate where you want each furniture piece to go in your desired patio layout. This process helps you visualize how much seating the patio can accommodate and what furniture dimensions fit best.

2. Choose the Right Size Set
Carefully check your desired furniture dimensions (width, height, and depth) online before making a purchase. Furniture sizes vary by brand, so check each piece’s specs to ensure they’ll fit within your patio.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing furniture:
- Find the perfect balance: For maximum comfort and utility, find a good balance between number of pieces and furniture size. Too many pieces can leave your patio feeling cluttered, while an abundance of negative space leaves it feeling unproportionate and off-balance.
- Make sure it flows: Be sure your furniture does not take up too much space so that you and your guests can easily move around each piece. Maintain at least 30 inches of space between seating like chaise lounges and dining or adirondack chairs to allow for easy movement.
- Consider your unique set-up: Take into account things like walls, railings, and fences when creating your patio furniture layout. Leave at least 24–30 inches of space between seating and walls or fences to easily navigate around the furniture.
- Plan for separate areas: Large patios may be able to accommodate distinct conversation seating and dining areas. Design your patio layout for traffic flow by creating a visible path between these spaces. Allow at 30–40 inches of clearance in heavy foot-traffic areas and 24 inches for lower foot-traffic spaces. With dining sets, provide about 3 feet of clearance around the table to allow for the moving in and out of chairs.
Choose from a number of arrangements for conversation sets or dining areas based on your patio:
Small Patio Layouts
A small patio measures approximately 6–10 feet long by 8–12 feet wide, or 48–120 square feet.
Small Patio Conversation Set
A three-piece conversation set with two seats and a small side table is sufficient for relaxation or socializing with a guest. Loveseats also work well, and can be combined with a coffee table or firepit for intimate gatherings. Alternatively, an L-shaped design means you can place your conversation set in the middle of the patio as a focal point, or wedge it into the corner to save space.
A three-piece patio dining set, bistro set, or patio bar dining set work best for a small patio. These options can include two dining chairs and a round or square table, or a three-piece sectional depending on your preferences. A dining set with a bench can maximize seating space in smaller areas when compared to individual chairs.
Medium Patio Layouts
A medium patio will range between 10–16 feet long and wide, or 100–256 square feet.
Medium Patio Conversation Set
A four-piece conversation set with a sofa or a loveseat, a pair of armchairs, and a coffee table works well for medium-sized areas. Four deep-seating arm chairs and a low-profile coffee table make another cozy option for medium patio conversation sets.
A medium-sized patio can accommodate a four-person dining set, with enough space to eat and enjoy intimate conversation. You can also choose a round outdoor dining table with four chairs for rounded patios or to increase flow space around the set.
Large Patio Layouts
A large patio comes in at 14 feet long x 20 feet wide and larger, or 280 square feet and above.
Large Patio Conversation Sets
Choose a six-piece set with a sofa, two arm chairs, a coffee table, and a pair of coordinating end tables for a cohesive look. This larger space can also accommodate a sectional sofa set placed in a U-shaped configuration to make the seating come full circle.
A six-piece set with four chairs, a bench seat, and a table is great for a small outdoor dinner party. If you have the space, an eight-piece set can accommodate the most people for outdoor meals and get-togethers.
