How to Position an Area Rug in a Bedroom
Snug as a bug!
Area rugs are an easy way to make your bedroom feel cozier and soften the transition out of bed each morning, but determining bedroom rug placement can be a design challenge for many. Explore these layouts to help you determine how to position an area rug in your bedroom.
1. Abide by the 2/3 Rule
A simple way to create a balanced look with your bedroom area rug is to abide by the 2/3 rule that recommends your rug should extend under roughly the bottom 2/3 of your bed. To achieve this proper rug placement, choose a 8' x 10' rug for a queen bed or a 9' x 12' for a king. Ideally, you want 18" – 24" of overhang on each side of your bed for balance and a few inches of space between the edge of your rug and the nightstands.
While round area rugs are not the most common for bedrooms, they can be used to create a soft visual frame around your bed. Center a round area rug around the bottom half or third of your bed to ensure the curve isn’t interrupted by its bottom corners. Large round area rugs look more intentional when styled under your bed, so choose an 8' or 9' rug for a queen bed and at least a 10' rug for a king. Round rugs are also a great option for a smaller room so your area rug won’t obstruct the path of your door or take up corner space.
For a stately feel in your bedroom, position an extra large rectangular area rug under your bed to include all four bed posts and both nightstands. You’ll likely need a 12' x 15' or larger area rug to accommodate all of the furniture. This look is best recreated in large primary bedrooms where you have plenty of open floor space on all sides of the bed.
If you still want the soft texture when you step out of bed in the morning but don’t have the budget or space for a large area rug, swap in a pair of runners. Choose runners that, when placed a few inches in front of your nightstands, are aligned with the bottom edge of your bed. This creates visual balance and offers functionality without sacrificing too much floor space in your bedroom.
In large primary bedrooms, you may have enough room for a small sitting area. If this is the case, consider using an area rug to define the sitting area as a distinct section of the bedroom. This bedroom rug placement will give the space a formal feel and serve as a stylish addition to take up floor space in an extra large bedroom. Depending on the size of your accent chairs and seating arrangement, choose a slightly smaller 4' x 6' or 5' x 8' area rug to frame the space.
In small bedrooms, you may not have the space to center the bed. If your bed is positioned in the corner of the room, consider centering your area rug in the room itself rather than aligning it with the bed. Aim to keep at least 2' or 3' of space between the edges of the rug and the walls to prevent an overcrowded feeling in the room.
Positioning area rugs in a children’s room might require more creative solutions. In a room with two or more twin beds, use runners between each bed to divide the space. You can also put runners along the outer edge of each bed to provide cushion at your feet when getting in and out of bed on either side. A shorter runner in the middle will allow space for a nightstand between the beds, while longer runners on the other sides will provide a visual frame.
