How to Put On a Duvet Cover
It’s easier than you think.
Have you recently bought a duvet and wondered the correct way to put it on your bed? Duvets are not like comforters. This bedding option is made up of an insert topped by a removable and washable cover for extra warmth and plush – and the first step to enjoying these features is assembling it correctly. In this guide, we’re teaching you how to put on a duvet cover in six steps so you’ll be enjoying your bedding and relaxing in the warmth in no time.

Step 1: Select Your Essentials
Before you complete the necessary steps, make sure you have all essentials on hand: specifically a duvet cover and duvet insert. Inserts are not required to enjoy a duvet – especially if you live in a higher temperature climate – but if you tend to be cold while you sleep or if you’re preparing for the cooler months, an insert adds heat and thickness to your bedding. To make the assembly process easier, opt for a duvet insert built with ties or loops for easy attachment to your cover.

Step 2: Start With the Cover Inside-Out
After washing your new duvet cover and insert, take your clean cover and turn it inside out. Place the cover flat on the bed with the opening end at the foot of the bed, making sure the side of your duvet cover that contains the print or pattern is on top (not face-down on the mattress).
Step 3: Lay Down Your Insert
Next, take your duvet insert and place it flat on top of your cover. Line up the corners of your insert to the corners of your cover and make sure the insert is as flat as possible, since this will make it easier to roll during the next step.
Step 4: Roll Your Cover & Insert
If your duvet cover has ties, secure the corners by tying each end tightly with the built-in loops of your insert. If your duvet insert does not have loops, still tie the corners tightly to the cover’s corners so the insert will stay in place inside.
Then, starting from the top of your bed, start rolling the cover and insert down the length of your bed to the foot, burrito style. Try to keep your cover and insert as tightly together as possible as you roll all the way down.
Step 5: Secure the End
Once your bedding burrito is completely rolled at the foot of your bed, the fun begins. You will need to pull the opening of your duvet cover up and over the length of your duvet insert all the way down the roll. Once you’ve inserted your insert into the duvet cover all the way down your roll, close your cover via its zipper, buttons, or other way of closing before moving onto the next step.
Step 6: Unroll & Fluff
With your duvet insert now stuffed completely inside your cover, start unrolling the duvet cover and insert the same way you rolled it up, but this time unrolling from the bottom of the bed up to the top of your bed. Your duvet should be unrolling to reveal the patterned side of your cover. Once your bedding is completely unrolled, fluff it up, and your sleep space is ready to go!
