What Are Mugs Made Of?

There are many materials you can choose from when picking the best mug. The most popular options are ceramic and plastic, but there are many other materials to choose from.

Ceramics

Most coffee mugs are made out of semi-fragile materials, like ceramic. Ceramic is easy to take care of and is typically dishwasher and microwave safe. If your ceramic mug ever breaks, it will be easy and affordable to replace. Other common semi-fragile ceramic materials include earthenware, stoneware, porcelain china, and bone china. While porcelain china tends to be more fragile than bone china, both provide an elegant look that is perfect for special occasions.

Tip!

Not all coffee mugs are dishwasher safe. Make sure to read the product description to determine the proper care needed for your cup.

Plastics

If you want a mug that can withstand anything, consider picking a durable plastic material. Two popular options are melamine and acrylic coffee mugs. These mugs won’t dent or break easily, making them an excellent choice if you’ve bruised one or two in the past. They’re especially great for kids! However, while most plastic coffee mugs are dishwasher safe, the majority are not microwave safe.

Additional

Outside of ceramics and plastics, what are coffee cups made of? We carry mugs made from unique materials – from stainless steel to bamboo! Glass is a classic option if you prefer a sturdy mug that is easy to clean and can be used for both formal and informal occasions. If you are looking for a mug that can be taken on the go, stainless steel is a perfect insulator that will protect your hands from heat while keeping your drink warm. Stainless steel also won’t absorb any of the strong flavors or aromas from your coffee. If you’re an avid camper, enamel mugs are a great option, as they are durable, easy to care for, and easy to heat. If you still haven’t found what you’re looking for, bamboo mugs are a unique twist on your traditional coffee mug. These environmentally conscious cups are durable and will last for years before naturally biodegrading.

Tip!

Drinking from a clear mug is supposed to make your coffee taste sweeter, and drinking from a white mug is supposed to make your coffee taste strong or more bitter.
