Find out if a chaise lounge will work in your home.

A chaise lounge is not always the first choice when it comes to selecting home seating options. Although it may be similarly sized to a sofa, there are a few differences that often leave it overlooked as a living room lounge chair. Learn more about how a chaise lounge could add a little drama to your space.

What Is a Chaise Lounge?

The name "chaise lounge" originates as a French term referring to a long chair, (with or without arms) that has an elongated seat to stretch out on. More often than not these lounger chairs have a backrest on only one side, in order to offer comfortable reclining for relaxing, reading, and even napping on. That being said – a chaise chair is unlike a pull-out couch or a daybed, as it does not have the same back support or mattress for long-term sleeping. Although their design allows you to lay down more easily than a sofa, a chaise is not really meant to be used as a sofa alternative.

Why Choose a Chaise Lounge?

A chaise lounge is a piece of furniture that is less of a necessity and more of a luxurious aesthetic and stylistic piece of furniture. Unlike larger living room furniture, such as sectionals, chaise chairs are versatile enough to fit in a number of rooms, including but not limited to the bedroom, study, office, and sunroom. There are even outdoor chaises to give you that same level of relaxation outside.

Some additional benefits of a lounger chair include the following:

Furniture Alternative: A chaise lounge provides an elegant addition to your living space while still offering a cozy place to rest for reading or watching television. It is both functional and stylish and there are so many options and sizes to choose from that you can easily find one to suit your decor.

Shop Small Chaise Lounges

Versatile: If your space is smaller and cannot fit a large sofa – or you are looking for a seating alternative that won't take up too much real estate – you may want to consider a lounger chair. Chaises also provide additional seating for guests who may not want to sit lumped together on a sofa.Take your pick from reclining chaises or those with removable cushions and place yours across from the sofa for a more cozy feel.

Shop Reclining Chaise Lounges

Visual: A chaise lounge can be used to visually break up a space without being too obtrusive – this works especially well in open plan rooms to avoid dividing the room with a bulky bookcase or furniture. You can choose between chaises with two arms, one arm, or no arms at all. A chaise can also help make a room appear larger and/or balance other furniture because it takes up less visual weight, especially if it has no arms.

Shop Two-Arm Chaise Lounges

Stylish: Thanks to its flowing lines and timeless shape, a chaise lounge has an almost sculptural feeling that is a welcome break from sharp angles and lines. Its flowing lines and low positioning mean it can be used in front of a focal point, such as a fireplace or a window, without blocking the view.

Functional: A lounger chair doesn't have to be confined to the living room. It can be used in an entryway as a sleek spot to sit while putting your shoes on. You can place it in a corner to occupy space that would otherwise go unused. For a private lounging area, you could even add a small side table to place your drink on while you take a moment to relax.
