King vs. California King: What’s the Difference?

King mattresses and California king mattresses are the largest standard mattress sizes available, but there are a couple key differences in their dimensions that you need to know.

Traditional King

The dimensions of a traditional king-size mattress are approximately 76" wide x 80" long. Depending on the style of the bed frame or headboard you choose, these dimensions will increase by 2"-5" more. A king-size bed is a good fit for a room that is at least 12' x 12' – you should also take into consideration other furniture you want to have in your bedroom and space to comfortably move around it. At least 30" of empty space should be left around your bed for easy movement.

California King

The dimensions of a California king-size bed are 72" wide x 84" long, making the California king slightly more narrow and longer than a traditional king mattress. A room that is at least 12' x 14' is best to accommodate the extra length of a California king-size bed. Follow the same guidelines of at least 30" of free space around your bed to make sure you can easily move around the room.

Benefits of a Traditional King-Size Mattress

  • Wide design to fit two or more: King-size mattresses are the widest mattress option, making it ideal to sleep two people with plenty of space to move around. King-size beds are also great if you have small children or furry friends who like to climb into bed with you often as well.
  • Easily find compatible bedding options: Traditional king mattresses are a popular mattress size, making it easy to find compatible-sized sheets, comforters, and headboards since there are so many options available.

Benefits of a California King-Size Mattress

  • Best option for tall sleepers: The extra length that you get with a California king mattress is ideal for tall people, especially those over 6'. A California king is the longest mattress size available at 84" long.
  • Can fit in narrower spaces: Since the California king is a few inches narrower than a traditional king, it can be a better choice if you are working with a narrow space, but still want a king-size mattress or extra length. The width of a California king can still comfortably sleep two people.
