Types of Lamp Shades: How to Select the Right One
This is the shade you do want to give.
Though most lamps come with a shade included, there are many different types of lamp shades available, giving you the opportunity to replace it with one that better matches your style. Keep reading to learn all about your options and how to choose the best one.
1. Choose a Compatible Attachment Type
There are three main lamp shade attachments: spider, clip-on, and Uno. If you are replacing a lamp shade on an existing lamp, you need to ensure the new lamp shade attachment is compatible with the lamp base. Learn more about the attachment types below.
Spider
This most common mount has three prongs that meet at the center of the shade. This middle point is where the fitter attaches to the top of a harp, a metal U-shaped wiring that protects the actual light bulb. The harp is not always included with a spider fitter lamp shade.
This fitter clips directly onto the light bulb like a clamp. Since the clips are directly touching the lightbulb, it’s safest to only use these lamp shades with a low-wattage bulb.
While there are two variations of the Uno fitter, the more common type rests directly atop the bulb socket where the bulb slips through the center ring. The alternate version has a center ring toward the top of the shade where the bulb is threaded through from its bottom. These are typically found in older lamps.
Screw-On
This type of shade attachment features a threaded ring and finial that connect the lamp shade to the base.
Tip!
You can find the lamp shade's attachment type in the product page's "Specifications" tab. Read How to Measure Lamp Shades for more information on finding the shade size.
2. Pick Out a Shade Shape
There are many types of lamp shade shapes available, so there's guaranteed to be a design that works for your space and style. The most popular lamp shade options are drum, empire, bell, square, oval, and rectangular, each creating a unique glow.
Empire: The empire shade is the standard type of lamp shade design. Light is spread downward through the wide brim of this classic cone shape.
Drum: A drum shade has a cylindrical frame with tall sides and wide rims of equal size, allowing light to equally flow upward and downward.
Bell: This elegant skirt-shaped cone has a wide brim at the bottom of its curved sides. It is typically used for traditional and classic decor as well as vintage aesthetics.
Bowl: An adaptation of the empire, bowl-shaped shades resemble a wide basin with light distributed downward.
Rectangular & Square: Both of these shades are popular in modern spaces. Rectangular shades have two sides that are longer than the others, whereas all the sides of a square shade are the same.

Material is another important consideration when choosing a lamp shade style. The textile you go with can influence the overall aesthetic of your space and how light is reflected throughout the room. Here are some awesome materials for lamp shades:
Linen: Linen is a popular material for a lamp shade and works well in almost any style room. The simple feel ultimately makes linen a versatile option and can help create a cozy feel.
Silk: Silk lamp shades are known for their luxurious feel and tend to add a touch of romance to the space. These lamp shades reflect light, resulting in an iridescent effect. If you are looking to add an opulent feel to your glamorous home, opt for a silk lamp shade.
Cotton: Cotton lamp shades are popular due to how easily they can be cleaned. Pleated shades are commonly made of cotton due to the material gathering easily. These lamp shades are versatile but are usually found in more laid-back or rustic rooms.
Polyester: Polyester lamp shades provide a look similar to cotton but have a lower price point. This is because they're made from a combination of human-made materials that are quick and easy to produce. This also means manufacturers can achieve a variety of fun colors, designs, and patterns with polyester lamp shades that might not be possible with natural materials.
Burlap: Burlap lamp shades are a great way to add wholesome warmth and rustic charm to any room. When paired with a light, this material produces warm, filtered light. Burlap lamp shades' natural textures and brown/tan finishes create a cozy, ambient glow throughout your space for ultimate relaxation.
Leather: If you are looking to add rustic charm to your space, opt for a leather lamp shade. It offers an earthy feel while adding a dim ambience to the room. Leather is fantastic if you intend to use your lamp for decorative purposes.
Metal: Metal lamp shades are great for directing light while adding an industrial feel to any room. Keep in mind that these shades can get hot, so be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Glass: Glass lamp shades are used primarily for decorative purposes and can add subtle ambience to any room in your home. White glass works well for brightening up a space, while more artistic glass lamp shades add a vintage feel.
Paper: Paper lamp shades are lightweight and add a clean feel to any room, perfect for contemporary rooms. Paper is commonly used for bold- or bright-colored lamp shades as well as patterned lamp shades.
Consider these embellishments to add extra style to your lamp shade.
Patterned: Step outside of your comfort zone with a patterned lamp shade. Patterns range from bold florals to rustic natural designs. Patterned lamp shade styles are great if you are looking to add decor to a neutral room or to tie in colors and themes that already exist in your space. Keep in mind that patterns tend to dim the light and work well for decor purposes.
Pleated: Pleated lamp shades have been around for years and aren’t going anywhere, thanks to their classic and traditional look. The soft gathers add a vintage feel to your shade and are commonly paired with traditional rooms and cottage or country decor and antiques.
Embroidered/Beaded: Embroidered or beaded lamp shades give your light a customized look. The embroidery or beads add texture to your lamp shade, helping to make it pop as a focal point in the room. If you are looking for a more subtle feel, opt for one with neutral colors, letting the texture be the star of the show.
